The Florida State University Career Center will host a series of career events this week to provide opportunities for students to connect directly with employers and for employers to fill their hiring needs.
Career Fair Week will begin with Engineering Day, a career fair focused on engineering, computer science and technical fields. More than 65 employers, including Deloitte, Pepsico, IBM and the U.S. Marine Corps, will be in attendance, seeking students to fill full-time, part-time, internship, and co-op positions. Engineering Day will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 26, at the Florida A&M University-FSU College of Engineering.
In partnership with the Center for Leadership and Social Change, the Career Center will host Seminole Success Night: A Celebration of Diversity and Leadership from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 27, at the FSU Alumni Center Grand Ballroom. This networking event welcomes members of FSU’s underrepresented populations and student leaders to interact with employers in an intimate setting.
Seminole Futures, FSU’s largest, all-majors career fair, will take place from 9 a.m. to noon and from 1 to 4 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 28, in the Donald L. Tucker Civic Center. Nearly 200 recruiters from corporate, non-profit and government organizations will attend the event, seeking skilled, team-oriented and creative students and recent graduates. All students are invited to network with employers, discover a variety of career paths and find relevant experience in their field of interest.
The Career Center will host on-campus interviews the day after Engineering Day and Seminole Futures in the Dunlap Success Center for students selected by participating employers.
Although graduates relied on a number of resources to secure employment, data gathered from the last three years of the graduating senior survey indicated that the No. 1 way students found employment opportunities was through Career Center services.
Sarah Sweat, a senior majoring in mechanical engineering, obtained an internship at Cummins Inc. after attending Engineering Day and attributes this experience to her use of Career Center services.
“Had it not been for the services at the Career Center, I would have never known about Cummins, let alone had the opportunity to interview and intern with them,” Sweat said. “I learned more than I can express into words. I took training courses in Engine Familiarization and Engine Performance, and I learned how to drive a manual transmission semi-truck. I also learned how a Fortune 500 company operates, as well as how to communicate and operate internationally with other departments and customers.”
Kai Daniels, a recent FSU graduate in the management information systems and entrepreneurship programs, met her current employer, General Motors, at Seminole Futures.
“Going to Seminole Futures was the most valuable service the Career Center provided for me,” Daniels said. “I was able to meet my future employer for both an internship and a full-time job.”
The Career Center has hosted Seminole Futures for more than 30 years and has provided numerous opportunities for students to form connections with employers. In 2015, the Career Center hosted 1,420 organizations and 11,159 students at career fairs.
