Florida State University’s School of Teacher Education within the College of Education has appointed a new director.
Kathleen Clark, Ph.D., associate professor of mathematics education in the College of Education, will provide leadership to faculty, students and staff within the School of Teacher Education, which houses more than 40 undergraduate and graduate degree programs and majors. She will begin her appointment as director Monday, May 17, 2021.
“I am honored and overwhelmed by the support of my School of Teacher Education colleagues and the college administration as I embark on this adventure,” Clark said. “Perhaps most important to me in my new role as director is to be able to serve the department which has been my academic home for the entirety of my 15 years at FSU.”
Throughout her career, Clark has focused on advancing the teaching and practice of mathematics education. She’s worked on a number of high-profile projects during her time at FSU, serving as the principal investigator for the NSF-funded project TRIUMPHS (Transforming Instruction in Undergraduate Mathematics via Primary Historical Sources). In recognition of her dedication to students, Clark was awarded the Undergraduate Teaching Award from the FSU College of Education in 2018.
“I am looking forward to working with Dr. Clark, and I believe the leadership she will bring to the School of Teacher Education will help not just those under her charge, but the entire college as the profession of teaching undergoes a watershed moment,” said Damon Andrew, dean of the College of Education. “I also want to thank Sherry Southerland for her time as director and the guidance she provided.”
Clark has taught in both K–12 classrooms and at institutions of higher education. Her teaching experience has taken her around the world as a visiting professor at the University of Siegen in Siegen, Germany, and a visiting academic researcher at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch, New Zealand.
Clark’s research has been published in prominent journals, and she is a member of the American Educational Research Association, Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators and the Florida Council of Teachers of Mathematics.
