The unique research that goes on at the world’s most powerful magnet lab is inspiring powerful artistic work.
Florida State University students and faculty will stage a series of dance performances this month in celebration of the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory, or MagLab.
“Magnetic Dances” is set for 7:30 p.m., Friday, Jan. 24 at the Nancy Smith Fichter Dance Theatre on the FSU campus. The event kicks off the Festival of the Creative Arts, a campuswide celebration presented by the FSU Office of Research that celebrates the diverse talents and creativity of faculty and students.
“Magnetic Dances” stems from a partnership between the MagLab and FSU English, Music and Dance students and faculty.
The collaboration began with a group of poetry students touring the lab for inspiration, drawing on the sights, sounds and stories of their visit. They shared their poems with student composers, who wrote and arranged music based on the verse. Next, students, staff and faculty from the School of Dance choreographed new dances inspired by the musical compositions and poems. At the performance, the College of Music Graduate Flute Ensemble will perform the pieces that will be danced by students and staff from the School of Dance.
“Magnetic Dances” will demonstrate the unique collaborative process, showcase the MagLab’s inspiring work, and highlight the intersection of art and science.
The performance will be held on the FSU campus:
