A Florida State University professor at the Dedman School of Hospitality has been recognized for lifetime contributions to outstanding scholarship and research in hospitality and tourism by the International Council on Hotel, Restaurant, and Institutional Education.
Woody G. Kim, the school’s Robert H. Dedman Professor of Hospitality Management, received the John Wiley & Sons Lifetime Research Achievement Award at ICHRIE’s 2017 Annual Summer Conference & Marketplace in Baltimore on July 28.
The award serves as a tribute for a distinguished individual who has demonstrated both leadership in a specialized field of study and high standards in the systematic and objective analysis of data that has led to a significant contribution to the body of knowledge.
Founded in 1946, ICHRIE is a nonprofit association promoting education, research, service and business in the hospitality and tourism industry. Among its founders was Charles A. Rovetta, the second dean of the College of Business at Florida State University.
“It is humbling to receive an award recognizing my research from the top organization in our field,” Kim said. “I am very grateful for the honor.”
Kim, who joined the faculty of the Dedman School in 2007, has long been regarded as one of the most prolific scholars in hospitality research internationally. He ranked third in the “Top 32 Hospitality Faculty by Research Impact” in a 2015 study published in the Journal of Teaching in Travel & Tourism. Previous studies ranked Kim as fourth (Way, Harrington, & Ottenbacher, 2012) and fifth (Park, Phillips, Canter, & Abbott, 2011) for worldwide research productivity.

Kim serves as director of the International Center for Hospitality Research & Development at the Dedman School. His research interests include revenue management, sustainability and service management.
He holds a doctorate in hospitality and tourism management from Purdue University, a master’s degree in hotel, restaurant and travel administration from University of Massachusetts, an MBA from University of Houston and a Bachelor of Arts in linguistics from Seoul National University, Seoul, South Korea.
In addition to teaching at FSU, he has taught at Oklahoma State University and Sejong University, Seoul, South Korea.
