Student Star: Jessy Jamison

Name: Jessy Jamison

“Although it might seem strange to apply aspects of the circus to real life, there definitely are parallels— the value of teamwork, for one. Without your teammates, there is no act.”

“I will always cherish my days with FSU’s Flying High Circus because the memories will be some of the best I will take from college,” says Jessy Jamison. “It’s not just about the performance at the end of the year; it’s about everything leading up to it—the friends you make, the hours of practice, and when you finally get that trick just right.

“Although it might seem strange to apply aspects of the circus to real life, there definitely are parallels—the value of teamwork, for one. Without your teammates, there is no act. You learn to trust and depend on one another. In the College of Business there is a strong initiative to promote team work and group projects—a major trend in business today. I can’t think of a better team-building experience than being part of the FSU Flying High Circus.”

An Honors student, Jessy is carrying a double major in Marketing and Management, with a minor in Communications. “Management and Marketing appealed to me because of the balance of creativity and reason in both, which is a perfect match for my personality,” she says.

As a consequence of her superb academic performance (she’s appeared on the Dean’s List every semester), Jessy has been inducted into numerous Honor societies – Phi Kappa Phi; Phi Eta Sigma; Beta Gamma Sigma, which recognizes students enrolled in Business and Management programs; and the National Society of Collegiate Scholars.

She’s also been busy gaining leadership experience and public speaking skills, first serving as vice president of communications for the student chapter of the American Marketing Association (AMA), and currently as president. “I hope to provide all students, regardless of major, with tools that will prepare them for entry into the professional world,” she says. “We have guest speakers, community service opportunities, fundraisers, a corporate tour, and socials, and we hope members gain skills in resume writing, leadership, and networking, so that they can better market themselves. It has been a lot of work, but rewarding. I have a driven group of officers that are contributing to AMA’s success.”

Jessy won’t be entering the Business world just yet. First, she wants a master’s in Integrated Marketing Communications, which should better prepare her for a career in Entertainment Marketing. “I have always had a strong desire to work in this industry, which encompasses music, movies, travel, print, and sports. Not only for the fast pace and products, but because it has seen so much change over the last few years and continues to evolve. Consumer choices are limitless and that creates a need for new Marketing strategies.”
