A Message from President Thrasher in Support for Asian, Asian American and Pacific Islander Communities

Dear FSU Family,

As the nation continues to grieve over the shootings in Atlanta that killed eight people, including six women of Asian descent, I want to share my own feelings of anger and sadness about this horrific act of violence. Across the country there has been an alarming increase in the number of violent and xenophobic incidents targeting AsiansAsian Americans and Pacific Islanders, and I ask everyone in the FSU community to join with me in condemning these appalling acts.

Asian and Asian American faculty, staff and students have been — and continue to be — affected by this hate, discrimination and violence. To these members of our FSU family, please know that we stand in solidarity with you and will continue to support you in any way we can.

If you or someone you know experiences racism, harassment or targeted violence of any kind at Florida State, please file a report at report.fsu.edu. Campus resources are available for faculty and staff through the Employee Assistance Program and for students through the University Counseling Center

Discrimination, violence or racism against any individuals in our community affects us all and runs contrary to our values as an institution of higher learning that strives to be safe and welcoming to everyone, regardless of race, religion, ethnicity, national origin, sexual orientation or gender identity.

At Florida State, we know that a rich multicultural environment enhances the educational experience for everyone, and we are committed to advancing our goals of diversity, equity and inclusion. We all have a responsibility to demonstrate kindness and respect, speak out against hatred and show support for one another, and together, I know that we will.

John Thrasher
