FSU Day at the Capitol on Tuesday, April 1, highlighted Florida State University’s many accomplishments on and off the field, from highly ranked academic programs to the university’s pre-eminent status to the Seminoles’ 2014 Bowl Championship Series National Championship.

The 15th annual event was held both inside the Florida State Capitol and outside on the plaza between the old and new state capitol buildings on a warm, sunny day. Displays in the Capitol showcased the university’s research initiatives and academic programs.

Outside, hundreds of supporters in garnet and gold were treated to performances by the Flying High Circus, the FSU pep band and cheerleaders, and speakers including Interim President Garnett S. Stokes, head football coach Jimbo Fisher, Morteza “Mori” Hosseini, chair of the Florida Board of Governors, and Allan Bense, chair of the Florida State University Board of Trustees.

“There’s a lot of momentum at Florida State. We’re leveraging our status as a pre-eminent university to launch major new initiatives funded from the dollars awarded to us as a top university in Florida,” Stokes said from the steps of the Old Capitol.

“Our students are the best we’ve ever had, coming to us with exceptionally high grades and accomplishments and winning all the top awards in record numbers once at FSU,” she said.

This year’s FSU Day at the Capitol presented an opportunity for state lawmakers, several of them alumni, to officially recognize the Seminoles for a job well done.

The “no cheering, no clapping” rule in the House chambers was ignored when members of the championship-winning football team were celebrated on the floor with two House resolutions, one recognizing the team’s perfect season and another paying homage to quarterback Jameis Winston’s Heisman trophy win.

“What can I say? We’re die-hard ’Nole fans in the House,” said Speaker of the House Will Weatherford.

A third House resolution designated April 1, 2014, FSU Day at the Capitol.

The Senate adopted its own resolutions, congratulating both the football team and Winston.
