Transfer students at Florida State University can join a national honor society for the first time in school history.
FSU launched a chapter of the Tau Sigma National Honor Society this spring, celebrating its 55 newly inducted students during a Transfer Student Awards & Induction Ceremony on Monday, April 1.
To be a member of Tau Sigma, students must have earned a 3.5 GPA after transferring with at least one year’s worth of academic credit and completing a full term at FSU.
“We’re honored to have a charter from Tau Sigma at FSU so that we can celebrate our hardworking and motivated transfer students,” said Robin Haggins, director of Transfer Student Services. “Transitioning to a new school has its challenges, especially at a large university. Receiving this honor is a testament to our transfer students’ resilience and commitment to higher education success.”
The event served as a swearing-in for the newly inducted Tau Sigma transfer students, as well as an awards ceremony honoring the Academic Center for Excellence (ACE) and the Student Government Association with Transfer Advocate Awards in recognition of their work as campus partners.
Provost Jim Clark highlighted the steps the university has taken to provide transfer students with this honor society opportunity and support them in their journey to earning an FSU degree.
“I’m proud to say that our efforts in supporting transfer students have not gone unnoticed,” said Provost Jim Clark. “With the highest two-year graduation rate for AA degree transfers in the entire State University System, FSU stands as a beacon of success for transfer students across Florida.”
Clark also congratulated the inductees and recognized the impact that transfer students have on the university, as they constitute a little over 25% of the undergraduate student body.
“You have excelled academically while contributing to our campus community with your diverse perspectives and backgrounds,” he said. “You serve in student government and other leadership roles, and you inspire others through peer mentorship. We are so pleased you have chosen Florida State University for your degree.”
Clark received an honorary Tau Sigma induction alongside Jennifer Janasiewicz, assistant director for Undergraduate Admissions and Graduation for the College of Business; Felicia Williams, director of the Student Government Association (SGA); and Andy Johnson, student program director of SGA.
FSU joins over 225 other four-year institutions that have or are establishing Tau Sigma chapters at their schools.
