Florida State University Libraries will showcase the upgraded facilities and services of the Paul A.M. Dirac Science Library during “Discover Dirac,” an open house for students, faculty and community members from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 19, followed by an evening reception featuring a presentation by Dirac biographer Graham Farmelo.
The open house event will feature tours and discovery stations, along with games and giveaways provided by the library staff and the facility’s new Starbucks Café location.
“The Dirac Science Library has a growing role in STEM initiatives at Florida State, and we are excited to show the recent renovations to the FSU community,” said Julia Zimmerman, dean of University Libraries. “At Florida State, our libraries provide great research and study spaces and also welcome and engage our students and faculty.”
With the renovations completed in 2014, Dirac boasts nearly 70,000 square feet of space with improved study rooms, desks and modern furnishings. Technology improvements at Dirac include new interactive Mondopads, wireless air-media displays and a 3-D printer available for student use. Dirac also provides tutoring, writing, technology and research services for the convenience of students and faculty.
Following the open house, the library — named for the Nobel Prize-winning theoretical physicist —will host a reception for Florida State faculty, administrators, alumni and community members from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Farmelo, author of “The Strangest Man,” an award-winning biography of Dirac, will make a presentation at the event. The reception will also include the dedication of the John and Nell Leffler Study Center.
