Faculty and Staff Briefs are produced monthly to recognize accomplishments and provide a space where honors, awards, bylines, presentations, grants, service and any other notable items can be showcased.

HONORS AND AWARDS

Woody Kim, Ph.D. (Dedman College of Hospitality) received the Michael D. Olsen Research Achievement Award during the 29th Annual Graduate Student Research Conference in Hospitality and Tourism in Miami, Fla.

Hyejin Park, Ph.D., RN (College of Nursing) received the first-place award for Best Poster at the 2023 Association for Information Science and Technology conference for her presentation on “Measuring Citizens’ Perceptions of AI Adoption for Instrumental and Value-Added Tasks.”

Nancy Benavides, J.D. (College of Law) received the 2024 Peter N. Kutulakis Student Services Award presented by the Association of American Law Schools’ Section on Student Services in Washington D.C.

Eundeok Kim, Ph.D. (College of Entrepreneurship) received The Most Popular Session Award at the 2024 Mini Globe Awards Ceremony hosted by the International Council for Small Business for her 2023 session “Sustainable Development Goals.”

James Du, Ph.D. (College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences) received an Outstanding Reviewer Award from the International Journal of Sport Management for providing outstanding constructive, collegial, and timely reviews that helped maintain the high standards of the journal.

Holly Hanessian (College of Fine Arts) received the Fellows of the Council Award, given to those who have made an outstanding contribution to the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts at the annual conference in Richmond, Virginia.

Vilma Fuentes, Ph.D. (Learning Systems Institute) director of FSU’s Ukraine Task Force, was honored during the 25th annual Florida Association of International Educators Conference with the “You Made a World of Difference” Award.

Amanda Tazaz, Ph.D. (Learning Systems Institute) was awarded a fellowship by the Gulf Research Program of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine as one of five early-career research fellows.

Kate Schell, M.A. (Learning Systems Institute) was accepted to the 2024 David L. Clark Graduate Seminar in Educational Leadership & Policy Studies, sponsored by the University Council for Educational Administration, Divisions A and L of the American Educational Research Association and SAGE Publications.

Robert Glueckauf, Ph.D. (College of Medicine) was given a lifetime achievement award by the American Psychological Association’s Society for Health Psychology.

Nicole Patton Terry, Ph.D. (College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences) was awarded the American Educational Research Association Fellowship.

Zucai Suo, Ph.D. (College of Medicine) was selected as the first-prize winner of the Cells Best Paper Awards among papers published in the journal in 2023 for his article “Mesenchymal Stem Cell-Derived Exosomes: Applications in Regenerative Medicine.”


GRANTS

Qi Feng, Ph.D. (Department of Mathematics) was awarded a grant from the National Science Foundation for the project “Hypoelliptic and Non-Markovian Stochastic Dynamical Systems in Machine Learning and Mathematical Finance: from Theory to Application.”

Michael Ormsbee, Ph.D., Joseph Watso, Ph.D., Kyle Smith, Ph.D., RD (College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences) and doctoral student Brett Cross were awarded a $77,588 grant from Compound Solutions for their project “Tributyrin Supplementation: Time Course and Efficacy to Improve Health and Performance.”

Prashant Singh, Ph.D. (College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences) received a $142,552 grant from the University of Florida – Florida Sea Grant Program for his project “PCR Lateral Flow Assays for the Rapid Onsite Authentication of Economically Impactful Seafood Species.”

Elizabeth Madden, Ph.D. (School of Communication Science and Disorders) received an external grant for their research exploring the impacts of aerobic exercise combined with Phono-Motor treatment towards improving reading competence in patients with aphasia.

Gloria Salazar, Ph.D., Ravinder Nagpal, Ph.D. (College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences) and Pradeep Bhide (College of Medicine) received a $600,000 grant from the Florida Department of Health for their project “Modulation of the Gut-Vascular Axis by E-Cigarette and Menthol.”

Bill Boyer, D.H.Sc. (College of Medicine) was recently awarded a $117,725 Student Technology Advisory grant to purchase a Simbionix/Surgical Science GI Mentor Virtual Training Simulator.

Adam Hanley, Ph.D. (College of Nursing) co-authored “Mindfulness-Oriented Recovery Enhancement for Veterans and Military Personnel on Long-Term Opioid Therapy for Chronic Pain: A Randomized Clinical Trial” published by the American Journal of Psychiatry. He also co-authored “Telehealth Mindfulness-Oriented Recovery Enhancement vs Usual Care in Individuals with Opioid Use Disorder and Pain: A Randomized Clinical Trial” published by JAMA Psychiatry.

Remy E. Jennings, Ph.D. (College of Business), published the article “Want to Be a Better Leader? Stop Thinking About Work After Hours” online with Harvard Business Review. The article will appear in a print issue in May.

Melissa Radey, Ph.D. and Dina Wilke, Ph.D. (College of Social Work) co-authored the article “Trajectories and Predictors of Client Violence Among Child Protection Service Workers,” published by Psychology of Violence.

Amy L. Ai, Ph.D. (College of Social Work) co-authored the articles “Anxiety in Patients Undergoing Open-Heart Surgery: The Role of Character, Strength, and Hope in a Structure Equality Model” and “Optimism Mitigated the Detrimental Role of Depression and Anxiety in Subjective Well-Being After Cardiac Surgery,” published by Innovations in Aging.

Gashaye Tefera, Ph.D. (College of Social Work) authored the article “Understanding access and utilization of healthcare services among African immigrant women in the United States: the application of Health Belief Model,” published by Applied Research in Quality of Life.

Jessica Pryce, Ph.D. (College of Social Work and Florida Institute for Child Welfare) wrote the book “Broken: Transforming Child Protective Services – Notes of a Former Caseworker” which will be published by Amistad on March 19.

Michael Killian, Ph.D., Lisa Schelbe, Ph.D. (College of Social Work) and Mia Lustria, Ph.D. (College of Communication and Information) co-authored “Engaging Adolescent Heart Transplant Recipients Through In-Ap Messaging During Mobile Health Intervention” published by Prog Transplant.

Ames Morton-Winter, ALM (The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art) authored the book “Purposeful Museum Programming Using Visitor Response Pedagogies.” It will be published by Rowman and Littlefield in May.

Stephen Tripodi, Ph.D. (College of Social Work) co-authored the book chapter “Solutions-focused brief therapy for students who are at risk” in the book “The School Services Sourcebook: A Guide for School-Based Professionals,” published by Oxford University Press.

Katie Kehoe, MFA (College of Fine Arts) moderated a panel on Art & Environmental Justice co-presented by the Atlantika Collective and the Office of Exhibitions, Maryland Institute College of Art on February 20, 2024.

Grace Aneiza Ali (College of Fine Arts) will jury the 2024 National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts Emerging Artist Fellowship in March. Ali was invited to serve as the 2024 Juror and will deliberate over the exceptional cohort’s approaches to mastery, dedication to creativity and commitment to personal expression to expand the scope of the medium.

Benjamin Murphy, Ph.D. (FSU Republic of Panama) presented “The Concept of Intuitive Validity” at the South American Logic Meeting held in Cusco, Peru. It will be published by the South American Journal of Logic.

Annabel Kay Ruiz, Ph.D. (FSU Valencia) hosted and aided in the coordination of the International Conferences “Migrating World: Interdisciplinary Approaches to Migration and Integration” and “Identity and Otherness in Film” as part of her ongoing collaboration with the London Centre for Interdisciplinary Research.

Chanta Haywood, Ph.D. (College of Communication and Information) led an interactive workshop “How to Write Like a Scholar,” that taught students effective strategies for enhancing the critical and analytical aspects of their arguments, ideas and thoughts on February 28.

Besiki Stvilia, Ph.D. (School of Information) presented the papers “Exploring Applications and User Experience with Generative AI Tools: A Content Analysis of Reddit Posts on ChatGPT” and “Toward the Conceptualization of Data Quality Assurance in Research Data Repositories,” at the 86th Annual Meeting of the Association for Information Science and Technology in London, UK, on Oct. 27-31.

Adrienne Barnes-Story, Ph.D., Marion Fesmire, Ed.D. and Brenda Wawire, Ph.D. (Learning Systems Institute) presented Certificates of Course Completion with Distinction to 34 Teacher Training College instructors from across Rwanda as part of the USAID Tunoze Gusoma Schools and Systems Activity.

Brenda Wawire, Ph.D. (Learning Systems Institute) virtually presented “Reading Comprehension Among Multilingual Learners: Impact of Intervention and Shared Classroom Practitioner Experiences” to the Reading Comprehension Group.

Stephanie Zuilkowski, Ed.D. (Learning Systems Institute and the College of Education), Julie Twomey and Pat Goldman (CPALMS team at the Learning Systems Institute) led a Prek-2 English Language Arts assessment writer training in South Florida.

Megan Deichen Hansen, Ph.D. presented a Grand Rounds lecture “Perinatal Psychiatry Access Programs: An Innovative Toll for Perinatal Mental Health Equity” at the Harvard Medical School.

Thesla Berne-Anderson, Ed.D. (College of Medicine) organized and led a leadership development conference in Orlando for alumni of Science Students Together Reaching Educational Diversity and Excellence. Elizabeth Foster, Ph.D., Erica Miller, DSW, LCSW, Allison Justice, MMS, PA-C, Shermeeka Hogans-Mathews, M.D., Interim Dean Alma Littles, M.D., Anthony Speights, M.D. and fourth-year medical student Sean Wimberley (College of Medicine) led various sessions.

Mark Zeigler, M.S. (College of Business) conducted a webinar for the American Society of Addiction Medicine. He also Emceed the Seminole 100 event for the Alumni Association and the Jim Moran Institute.

Heather French and Ashley French of the Learning Systems Institute’s CPALMS team led a training in Tallahassee with PreK-2 math educators from across Florida to develop their knowledge of how to write strong assessment items.

Alice Maxwell, MA, Alycia Malicz, Emma Massaglia and Jaden Austin, MA (Division of Student Affairs Marketing and Communications Office) presented “Collaborative Marketing for a Unified Student Success Initiative: Hello FSU!” at the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education District III Annual Conference in Orlando, Fla. Also in attendance were Anna Prentiss and Jenny Ralph, MS (University Communications).

Under the leadership of Cindy Green, Ed.D. and coordination of Betty Jensen (Center for Global Engagement), Florida State University hosted the Florida Association of International Educators.

Li Pon, MA (The Career Center) and Jared Tirone, MS (Center for Global Engagement) presented “Guiding International Students Through the U.S. Career Landscape.” Steven Niette, MA (Center for Global Engagement) co-presented “Administrative Processing: The Student Experience.”

The Area Health Education Center team (College of Medicine) conducted a Tobacco Treatment Specialist Training 3-Day Foundation Course on Feb. 20-22, 2024, at Orlando Marriott Lake Mary.

Vilma Fuentes, Ph.D. (Learning Systems Institute) director of FSU’s Ukraine Task Force and a visiting associate in research at the Learning Systems Institute, participated in the presentation “International Education and Collaboration at FSU!” at the 25th annual Florida Association of International Educators Conference.


PERFORMANCES AND EXHIBITIONS

Katie Kehoe, MFA (College of Fine Arts) has work featured in the Educators as Artist Exhibition at the Albany Museum of Art in Albany, Georgia. Her piece “Portable Wildfire Shelter, 35.70642°N, 105.40669°W, Santa Fe National Forest, NM” will be exhibited alongside work from other educators from throughout North Florida and South Georgia.


SERVICE

Remy E. Jennings, Ph.D. (College of Business), was invited to serve on the editorial board of Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes.

Ebrahim Randeree, Ph.D. (College of Communication and Information) led a group of student volunteers to the Florida Technology Student Association Conference in Orlando to serve as judges for the teams of middle and high school students competing in STEM-related events from February 21-24, 2024.

Zhe He, Ph.D. (School of Information) was elected as Chair-Elect of the American Medical Informatics Association’s Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining Working Group on Dec. 15, 2023.


NOTABLE

Lisa Hightow-Weidman, MD, MPH (College of Nursing) co-established the Enlaces Por La Salud HIV intervention for Latina(o/x) and LGBTQIA+ communities. The program was recognized and funded through the Ryan White HIV/ AIDS Program Best Practices Compilation for its transformative impact.

Jennie Robinette, M.Ed. and Brenda Wawire, Ph.D. (Learning Systems Institute) participated on the training team that kicked off Cohorts E and F of the Foundational Literacy Course for 53 Teacher Training College instructors from across Malawi. The training is part of the USAID-funded Strengthening Teacher Education and Practice Activity.

Marion Fesmire, Ed.D. (Learning Systems Institute) toured institutions in Malawi for the instruction of children with special needs while working on Strengthening Teacher Education and Practice Activity.

Flavia Ramos-Mattoussi, Ed.D. (Learning Systems Institute), Jeffrey Milligan, Ph.D.  and Dina Vyortkina, Ph.D. (College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences) led a delegation from Egypt to FSU as a part of the USAID Teacher Excellence Initiative in Egypt Activity.

Joseph Gabriel, Ph.D. (Department of History) wrote a legal brief in the case “Genbiopro Inc. v. Raynes and Morrisey,” which is currently being litigated in the Fourth Circuit United States Court of Appeals.

Rafe Blaufarb, Ph.D. (Department of History) spoke at the Modern France Workshop on “How to Read a Cahier de Doleances,” hosted by the University of Chicago.
