Innovative oil transport, democracy and Islam, fire arts on campus this week

Daniel D. Joseph

Following Election Night, Florida State University has scheduled an active week of events.

Daniel D. Joseph, a professor of aerospace engineering and mechanics at the University of Minnesota, will deliver this year’s Sir James Lighthill Distinguished Lecture in Mathematical Sciences at Florida State University. Joseph plans to discuss an innovative method for piping crude oil that costs a mere fraction of more traditional transport methods. The lecture, which is free and open to the public, is scheduled to take place at 4 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 5, at the Florida State Alumni Association Ballroom. For more information, contact Susan Greenwalt, (850) 644-0601, sgreenwalt@fsu.edu.

The following day, Egyptian Ambassador Hamdi Saleh, a visiting Fulbright Scholar at Florida State University, will discuss “What the Next President Needs to Know about Democracy and Islam” on Nov. 6 as part of FSU’s “Human Rights and National Security in the 21st Century” fall lecture series. Saleh’s talk will focus on what the next U.S. president — and the American public — need to consider in promoting democracy and human rights in the Arab and Islamic countries of the world. The event, which is free and open to the public, will be held at noon, Thursday, Nov. 6, at the College of Law Rotunda.
