Florida State University’s Department of Interior Architecture and Design is introducing a new graduate degree open to all undergraduate majors covering design fundamentals, professional practice and design software.

The First Professional Interior Design Master of Science degree will accommodate students with a bachelor’s degree in another field who wish to augment or change their career to interior design practice.

“This new degree offering provides another path for our students to acquire skills from one of the nation’s premier programs in interior architecture and design,” said Michael Carrasco, associate dean of the College of Fine Arts. “In embracing those without an undergraduate degree in the field, it enhances the multidisciplinary experience of an already dynamic field.”

Classes for the degree begin summer 2022 and cover topics like design studio problem-solving, construction systems, lighting and design communications using hand and digital techniques. Courses in history, sustainability and design psychology help students craft a foundation of understanding for thoughtful practice.

“This program will be an exciting addition to our learning community, and with their diverse backgrounds, its students will inject their unique vitality into classroom discussions,” said Jill Pable, chair of the Department of Interior Architecture and Design. “We are excited to welcome them to design.”

The structure of the major ensures that students will graduate in just over two years after taking 85 credit hours. Students will graduate ready to work as interior designers and fully prepared to take the National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ) licensing examination, the industry’s indicator of proficiency in interior design principles.

Admission to this degree follows the university and the Department of Interior Architecture and Design requirements. This new degree joins a variety of graduate opportunities offered by the department, including the Master of Science, the Master of Arts and the Master of Fine Arts degree programs.

The program is approved by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design. Applications for the First Professional Interior Design Master of Science are due Feb. 1.
