Hughes studies the effects of programs, policies and pedagogies on an individual’s STEM identity (one’s sense of belonging within their chosen STEM discipline). She often uses qualitative methods to learn from the storis of individuals who have persisted in STEM and those who have chosen to leave STEM. The lessons learned from these in-depth experiences can inform policy and practice for K-12 educators as well as STEM departments at institutions of higher education.
Hughes wrote about the importance of the role of teachers in shaping girls’ futures as coders for The Conversation.
