Alumni events in Tampa, Orlando to showcase Florida State Rhodes Scholars

For alumni of The Florida State University living in the Tampa and Orlando areas, a Rhodes trip doesn’t have to mean a road trip. An alumni outreach program hosted by Florida State’s Alumni Association will take the school’s three recent Rhodes Scholarship recipients — Oxford scholars Garrett Johnson, Joe O’Shea and Myron Rolle — and FSU President T.K. Wetherell on the road to speak to former students on Tuesday, April 14, at the Grand Hyatt Tampa Bay and on Wednesday, April 15, at the Sheraton Downtown Orlando.

In both Tampa and Orlando, "Rhodes on the Road" will include a luncheon and talks by Wetherell and each of the three Rhodes Scholars. Open to Florida State alumni and their guests, the lunch begins at noon and is $25 per person. Prior to the Rhodes event, the Alumni Association will kick off its program at 10:30 a.m. with a free "Career Jump Start" seminar led by the Florida State Career Center, which will discuss job search strategies; resume writing and critiquing; researching potential employers; social networking; and negotiating job offers.

Pre-registration is required for both "Rhodes on the Road" and "Career Jump Start." To sign up, visit the Alumni Association Web site: alumni.fsu.edu/community/Page.aspx?pid=1577.

"That FSU has produced three Rhodes Scholars in the past four years has been an incredible source of pride for our alumni," said Scott Atwell, president of The Florida State University Alumni Association. "’Rhodes on the Road’ is a great opportunity for faithful Seminoles to hear first hand how these incredible graduates are carrying on the FSU tradition and leading for the greater good." Atwell noted that FSU students always had the talent to be Rhodes Scholars, but only in recent years did Florida State establish an on-campus resource, the Office of National Fellowships, dedicated to facilitating the complex application and interview processes that scholarships such as the Rhodes, as well as the Goldwater, Fulbright and others, entail.
