Florida State University has pedaled into the national spotlight, earning Silver-level recognition in the 2025 Bicycle Friendly University Awards from the League of American Bicyclists.

Through years of planning, infrastructure improvements and education, the university continues to create a safe, accessible environment for cyclists.

“A bicycle-friendly campus is a more connected and equitable campus,” said Holly Smith, sustainability manager at Florida State University. “Our programs are designed to reduce barriers to riding a bike and empower students to move around campus sustainably. Earning Silver for the third time shows how these efforts are making a real impact.”

FSU offers a range of resources to support biking, including bike racks near most buildings, monitored by FSUPD for security and multiple repair stations equipped with QR codes for instructional videos. Students, faculty and staff can register bikes for free, rent bicycles through the reCycle Bike renting program and take CyclingSavvy safety courses at no cost. Seminole Express and StarMetro buses also include bike racks, making it easy to combine cycling with public transit.

“We are proud to support biking as a core part of campus life,” said Richard Rind, director of transportation and parking services. “Our bike maintenance stations, reCycle Bike renting program, CyclingSavvy safety programming and other services help to encourage biking on campus and promote safe biking practices for students who bike.”

The League of American Bicyclists, a national nonprofit, works to make bicycling safer and easier for transportation and recreation. Its Bicycle Friendly University (BFU) program evaluates colleges on five areas: engineering, encouragement, education, evaluation and planning and accessibility. Institutions may earn recognition at levels from honorable mention to platinum.

The November 2025 awards recognized 45 colleges and universities for making biking a core part of campus life. FSU’s achievement places it among campuses investing in infrastructure and partnerships that make biking safer and more accessible.

“We appreciate the efforts of the League of American Bicyclists to promote biking infrastructure on campuses nationwide,” Rind said. “Our Silver-level recognition in the Bicycle Friendly University Awards reflects our ongoing commitment to making biking an accessible transportation option on campus.”

FSU’s continued success in earning BFU recognition shows that biking is more than transportation — it’s part of the university’s identity. By investing in programs, education and infrastructure, FSU promotes sustainability, wellness and mobility across campus.
