The Florida State University community enjoyed free snacks and entertainment at the annual President’s Ice Cream Social on Landis Green April 6.
The event provided cookies, drinks, popcorn, a live disc jockey and ice cream scooped and served by President John Thrasher, faculty and administrators.
Thrasher passed out the chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream while posing for pictures and getting to know the thousands of students in attendance.
“This has got to be one of the bigger crowds we’ve had out here for this,” President Thrasher said. “I’ve gotten to know a lot more students since I’ve been here, and this is kind of a confirmation that they can come by and say hello. It’s really neat.”
This year’s student turnout was so high that the 240 gallons of ice cream served ran out before the event came to a close.
RaJhai Spencer, associate director for Academic Support and Student Success at the Center for Academic Retention and Enhancement, came out to help scooping efforts after seeing the success of last year’s social.
“It’s a great opportunity to talk to some of the students and it really brings the FSU community together,” she said. “Everyone’s out here enjoying the day and people look forward to it every year.”
Between bites of ice cream, students tossed a few beanbags for a corn hole game, got their faces painted and showed off their moves in a dance competition. The event also featured a performance by FSU’s Flying High Circus and an inflatable obstacle course.
The President’s Ice Cream Social was sponsored by Asker Distributors, Edy’s Grand Ice Cream, Coca-Cola and Catering by Seminole Dining.
