First Generation Students | Issues in Education (November 2011)

This year, twenty-three percent of FSU’s incoming freshmen were the first in their families to go to college. They’re known as “First Generation Students.” In this episode of Issues in Education, FSU President Eric Barron and WFSU-TV’s Suzanne Smith talk about the unique challenges facing these students and what is being done to help them. Joining in the discussion is Angela Richards, the Director of the FSU Center for Academic Retention and Enhancement; Dr. Maxine Jones, a Professor in FSU’s Department of History; and Senior Kaila Kowalski, who is about to become the first in her family to graduate from college. Dr. Barron also discusses the latest announcement regarding the Florida State University Veterans Center.
