FSU may seem like a long way from the bright lights of Broadway, but this year the 2010 Tony Awards were up close and personal for many of Florida State’s alumni. The cast or crew of at least five nominated productions included graduates from the FSU School of Theatre. In this episode, FSU President Eric Barron talks with Sally McRorie, dean of the College of Visual Arts, Theatre and Dance, and Kate Gelabert, associate professor and head of the Bachelor of Fine Arts Music Theatre program at FSU. They discuss the theatre department, the students who were part of this year’s Tony Awards and how the school mentors talent during and after their years at FSU. Dr. Barron also discusses the importance of arts education and how the university balances that with the priority of increasing the number of graduates in the STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) fields.
