Faculty and Staff Briefs are produced monthly to recognize accomplishments and provide a space where honors, awards, bylines, presentations, grants, service and any other notable items can be showcased.

HONORS AND AWARDS

Kadir Kozan, Ph.D. (College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences) and doctoral students Chaewon Kim, Veronica Brewer, Alex Barrett and Jaesung Hur won third place at the International Board of Standards for Training, Performance and Instruction’s competition for instructor resources.

Azat Gundogan, Ph.D. (College of Social Sciences and Public Policy) received the Excellence in Teaching Award from the Community and Urban Sociology Section of the American Sociological Association.

Zhe He, Ph.D. (School of Information) won the Pediatric Poster Award at the 2024 American Transplant Congress.

Christopher Okonkwo, Ph.D. (Department of English) was selected as a finalist for the 2024 African Literature Association’s Best Scholarly Book Award for his book “Kindred Spirits: Chinua Achebe and Toni Morrison.”

Karen Works, Ph.D. (Department of Computer Science) was awarded an AnitaB.org Advancing Inclusion Faculty Scholarship to virtually attend the Grace Hopper Celebration 2024.

Robert Romanchuk, Ph.D. (Department of Modern Languages and Linguistics) was awarded the Hellenic Research Fellowship from the University Library at California State University in Sacramento.

Timothy Baghurst, Ph.D. (College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences) was a co-recipient of the 2024 National Association for Kinesiology in Higher Education Engaged Scholar Program Award.

Christopher Okonkwo, Ph.D. (Department of English) was invited to join the editorial board of research in African Literatures, the most prestigious journal in African literature.

Damon Andrew, Ph.D. (College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences) received the 2024 Garth Paton Distinguished Service Award from the North American Society for Sport Management.

Chuck Ehrhardt, J.D. (College of Law) received the 2024 Law Faculty/Administrator Professionalism Award presented by The Florida Bar’s Henry Latimer Center for Professionalism.

Jie Chen, Ph.D. (College of Nursing) has been selected as a Travel Awardee for the Pain and Research Network Annual Meeting 2024.

Maicon Landim-Vieira, Ph.D. (College of Medicine) received a Travel Award for the Heart Rhythm Society conference in Boston.

Ann Centner, Ph.D. (College of Medicine) was one of six finalists for the Postdoctoral Award Competition at the annual American Society for Nutrition conference.

James Du, Ph.D. (College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences) was named a North American Society for Sport Management Research Fellow.

Aline Dort, MS, Ed.S., CCC (The Career Center) earned the Certified Career Counselor credential through the National Career Development Association credentialing body.

Mackenzie Fisher, MS, Ed.S., NCC, CCC (The Career Center) earned the Certified Career Counselor credential through the National Career Development Association and completed the CACREP accredited FSU Career Counseling M.S./Ed.S. degree. She also earned The National Certified Counselor (NCC) credential and passed the National Counselor Examination (NCE).

Casey D. Xavier Hall, MPH, Ph.D. (College of Nursing) was selected as a scholar for program years 2024-2027 with the Sustained Training in Aging & HIV Research Program at UC San Diego School of Medicine.

Laurie Abbott, Ph.D., RN, DipACLM, PHNA-BC, CNE (College of Nursing) was named a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing.


GRANTS

Shamra Boel-Studt, Ph.D. (College of Social Work) was awarded a $125,000 grant from the Florida Institute for Child Welfare for her research project “The Caregiver Journey: An In-Depth, Multiple-Case Study of Families’ Experiences with Accessing Residential Care for Their Children with High Level Needs.”

Weikuan Yu, Ph.D. (Department of Computer Science) was awarded a $225,000 grant from the National Science Foundation for his project on deep learning applications, “CropDL – Scheduling and Checkpoint/Restart Support for Deep Learning Applications on HPC Clusters.”

Guang Wang, Ph.D. and Weikuan Yu, Ph.D. (Department of Computer Science) were awarded a grant from the National Science Foundation for their project, “Collaborative Research: Frameworks: MobilityNet: A Trustworthy CI Emulation Tool for Cross-Domain Mobility Data Generation and Sharing towards Multidisciplinary Innovations.”

Lenore McWey, Ph.D. (College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences) and Melissa Radey, Ph.D. (College of Social Work) received $320,710 from the Florida Institute for Child Welfare for their longitudinal study “Understanding Safety Nets & Service Use Among Child Welfare System -Involved Caregivers to Improve Service Provision: A Mixed Methods Examination.”

Rylan Douthett, DNP, APRN, FNP-BC, Kathryn Keane, DNP, RN, PCCN, CNE, Jared Miller, Ph.D., Erik Salsgiver, DNP, MSM, APRN, FNP-BC, and Steven Palazzo, Ph.D., MN, RN, CNE, ANEF (College of Nursing) received part of a $5 million grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) to educate and train health care workers to provide age-friendly and dementia-friendly care.

LeeAnn Barfield, Ph.D-c., DNP, AG-ACNP, APRN, CNE, and Marsha Hartline, DNP, RN, CNML, CNE (College of Nursing) received a grant from the Department of Health and HRSA to fund the Nurse Faculty Loan Program at Florida State University.

Michael Ormsbee, Ph.D. (College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences), Elisa Angeles (FSU Athletics) and alumnus Kieran Paterson were awarded a $93,864 grant from Dairy Management Inc. for their project “The Effect of Pre-sleep Milk-derived Protein to Support Sleep Quality and Recovery in Elite Female Athletes.”

Gashaye Tefera, Ph.D. (College of Social Work) co-authored the article, “A Social-Ecological Perspective on Understanding Facilitators to Access Primary Health Care Services among Ethiopian Immigrant Women in the United States” published in the Journal of Health Care for the Poor and Underserved.

Qiuchang Katy Cao, Ph.D. (College of Social Work) co-authored the article “I’m Part of Something That Matters”: Exploring What Older Adults Value Through Their Engagement in Age-Friendly Community Initiatives” published in the Journal of Gerontological Social Work.

Matthew Goff, Ph.D. (Department of Religion) published the book “The Apocrypha: A Guide,” available for pre-order from Oxford University Press. He also published the article “Chapter 11 Between Two Texts: The Aramaic Language, Jewish and Manichean Books about Giants, and Asian Scribal Networks in Antiquity” in “The Aramaic Books of Enoch and Related Literature from Qumran.”

Gretchen Stahlman, Ph.D. (School of Information) co-led the workshop “Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAP): A Dialogue on Science, Public Engagement and Communication” in Washington D.C., funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF).

Don Latham, Ph.D., Melissa Gross, Ph.D. (School of Information) and doctoral candidate Vashalice Kaaba presented at the Children’s Literature Association annual meeting in Madison, Wisconsin. Latham gave the paper presentation “Miss Pickerell Goes to ChLA: Looking Back at Ellen MacGregor’s Science Fiction for Children,” Gross presented “Bistrategic Popularity: Power and Tyranny in I, Claudia” and Kaaba presented “ReNewbery: A Multidisciplinary Study of Anti-Blackness in Black-Authored Newbery Books and its Implications for Critical Librarianship.”

Marcia Kosanovich, Ph.D. (Florida Center for Reading Research) presented “Preparing Young Children for School” and “Foundational Skills to Support Reading for Understanding in Kindergarten Through 3rd Grade” at the Summer Literacy Institute.

Mark Zeigler, MS (College of Business) delivered the keynote address for the Florida Association of City and County Administrators’ Annual Convention and spoke at the Derrick Brooks Bunch Business Academy and was the spring luncheon speaker for the FSU Retired Faculty.

Sylvie Naar, Ph.D., Ivan Balan, Ph.D., Rebecca Giguere, MPH, Andrea Cheshure, MS, Sara Green, MSW and Jonathan Morgan (College of Medicine) co-authored and presented “The YACHT Program: Young Adult Centered HealthForce Training to Increase HIV Testing and Pre-exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) Referrals among Young Sexual Minority Men” at the AIDS Institute’s 2024 Florida HIV Community Providers and Researchers conference.

Tarik Dogru (Dr. True), Ph.D. (FSU Valencia) led the seminar on the implications of generative artificial intelligence for the hospitality and tourism industry at the University of Alicante.

Kate Schell (Learning Systems Institute) led a Qualitative Data Coding and Analysis workshop for the Malawi Strengthening Teacher Education and Practice activity in Lilongwe.


SERVICE

Zhe He, Ph.D., Mia Lustria, Ph.D., Balu Bhasuran, Ph.D. (School of Information) and Mafé Brooks (College of Communication and Information) represented FSU to cohost the 12th Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers International Conference on Health Informatics with the University of Florida in Orlando, FL, from June 3-6. Zhe He served as Leading General Co-Chair.

Ebe Randeree, Ph.D. (College of Communication and Information) and Faye Jones, Ph.D. (School of Information) led FSU iCamp, a 4-week program that brings over 25 Tallahassee high school students to campus to learn about topics in tech including Python, game design, graphic design and data analysis.

LeeAnn Barfield, Ph.D-c., DNP, AG-ACNP, APRN, CNE (College of Nursing) was appointed to serve on the Florida Nurses Association Board.

Lisa Hightow-Weidman, MD, MPH (College of Nursing) was elected to the Academy of Science, Engineering and Medicine of Florida.

Jessica Bahorski, Ph.D., APRN, PPCNP-BC, WHNP (College of Nursing) was elected as a Co-chair of the Florida Nurse Practitioner Network Women’s Health State of Science.

April Lovett, Ph.D. (College of Nursing) was appointed to serve on the Tallahassee Working Well Board.

Miguel Negron, MS, (Student-Athlete Academic Services) participated in a panel “Director’s Dialogue: Leading Employees in Today’s World of College Athletics” at the National Association of Academic and Student-Athlete Development Professionals convention in Las Vegas.

Alma Littles, M.D. (College of Medicine) completed her term on the Governing Council and as Delegate to the American Medical Association for the Academic Physicians section at the AMA’s annual conference in Chicago.

Stephen Chelko, Ph.D. (College of Medicine) helped coordinate free heart screenings for youth 10-22 through the non-profit Who We Play for, at the Leon County EMS Public Safety Complex, part of the organization’s efforts to prevent sudden cardiac death in athletes.

Jing Wang, Ph.D., MPH, RN, FAAN (College of Nursing) was invited by the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Xavier Becerra to serve on the National Advisory Council for Nursing Research at the National Institute of Health.

Sally Karioth, Ph.D. (College of Nursing) served as a teaching faculty for orientation leaders at the International Camp Boggy Creek’s first 2024 session. These camps serve children with over 50 medical conditions, including cancer, HIV/AIDS and severe asthma. Karioth is also part of the panel of experts for the Path from Grief to Grace event hosted by LeMoyne Arts.

Jonathan Fozard, Ph.D. (Office of the Provost) was appointed to the Government Technology Modernization Council by Florida Senate President Kathleen Passidomo.

Adrienne Barnes-Story, Ph.D. (Learning Systems Institute) serves as the Principal Investigator for the United States Agency for International Development Strengthening Teacher Education and Practice Activity in Malawi, which filmed lessons as part of a series of videos to support instruction at Teacher Training Colleges.

Ashely Krutz-Ordner, MA (Office of the Provost) was elected President of Pulse International.
