Rationale and Use of Funds
-
Activity & Service Fee – Funds programs and organizations that foster connection, engagement, and personal growth, including Student Government Association, the Student Union, Student Engagement, and Campus Recreation. The last increase was over 10 years ago. These programs/organizations can no longer sustain existing student services, without receiving an increase in their revenues. The increase will be used to address a decade of rising expenses due to inflation and required minimum wage increases. In addition, the increases will be used to address new services being requested by students.
-
Health Fee – Supports University Health Services (UHS) and Counseling & Psychological Services (CAPS). The last increase was over 10 years ago. These programs/organizations can no longer sustain existing student services, without receiving an increase in their revenues. The increase will be used to address a decade of rising expenses due to inflation and required minimum wage increases. In addition, the increases will be used to address new services being requested by students.
-
Athletics Fee – Supplements the University’s Athletics programs, including operations, security, and compliance. The last increase was over 10 years ago. Athletics can no longer sustain existing student services, without receiving an increase in their revenues. The increase will be used to address a decade of rising expenses due to inflation, Federal legislation, and required minimum wage increases.
-
Transportation Access Fee – Funds the construction, enhancement, and deferred maintenance for campus parking garages/lots. Also, funds the use of city and campus buses and access to campus parking and pedestrian pathways. The last increase was over 10 years ago. Transportation and Parking Services can no longer sustain existing student services, without receiving an increase in their revenues. The increase will be used to address a decade of rising expenses due to inflation and growing deferred maintenance on existing facilities. In addition, the increase will be used for planning, design, and construction of a new garage on the Northwest side of the Main Campus.
Message of Support from the Student Government Association
As Florida State University students, we are lucky to attend one of the top universities in the nation and one that is also recognized for its affordability. We pride ourselves as an institution on our ability to use student-provided funds efficiently; in fact, we have been recognized for such for many years in national metrics. However, after more than a decade without a fee increase and budgets increasingly becoming constrained by inflation, it is imperative for us to invest in the success of our university with renewed funding commitments.
With this nominal increase in fees, departments within Athletics, Health, and Activities and Services will receive additional revenue to their budgets. These funds will enable the university to continue to elevate FSU’s student experience, which is already one of the best in the nation. We understand that paying more in fees is generally not desirable, but this recommendation was made alongside the Local Fees Committee to enhance student success and the value of degrees during and after our time at Florida State University. Thank you for your support.
In accordance with state law, this notice is being emailed to all enrolled students.
