Florida State University to host third annual Discovery Days

Florida State University’s Office of Research will host the third annual FSU Discovery Days, a weeklong celebration of research, creativity and innovation, from Oct. 18–25.

Discovery Days has something for everyone — from “Shark Tank”-style business pitch competitions to kid-friendly physics and art projects to lectures highlighting clinical research breakthroughs in medicine.

“Discovery Days is a vibrant reflection of the intellectual energy and collaborative spirit that defines Florida State,” said Stacey S. Patterson, Vice President for Research. “From startup launches and clinical pitches to STEM career panels and rocket science for kids, this week invites our community to explore the many ways FSU research transforms lives.”

Throughout the week, there will be more than 25 events showcasing the variety of work done across the university.

Among this year’s featured events is the launch of ICON-Health, a new initiative designed to foster interdisciplinary collaboration and innovation across campus while advancing nutrition policy (Oct. 20). The Clinical Catalyst event will feature local healthcare providers presenting challenges that they face in their practices that need evidence-based solutions (Oct. 20).

Discovery Days also marks the grand opening of IGNITE Tallahassee, FSU’s new startup incubator at Innovation Park, which aims to accelerate entrepreneurship and tech transfer (Oct. 21).

The Discovery Challenge returns with a “Shark Tank”-style pitch competition awarding up to $100,000 in prizes to student and faculty innovators (Oct. 21).

Moderated by Patterson, the STEM Career Paths panel will explore diverse career pathways for students majoring in science, technology, engineering and math (Oct. 24). A symposium on Reimagining Florida’s Child Welfare Training Using Virtual Reality will be held the same day, focused on how FSU researchers are using VR technology to improve training for child welfare investigators in Florida (Oct. 24).

To end the week, Saturday Morning Physics + Art (Oct. 25) offers a family-friendly experience combining hands-on rocket science and creative expression for K–12 students.
