FSU’s College of Business is leading the university initiative in partnership with Information Technology Services to provide this self-paced management training, giving business students a unique opportunity to gain essential leadership skills and hands-on experience with cutting-edge AI tools at no cost.

FSU is one of the first institutions in the country to offer the Google People Management Essentials course.

“We are excited about our partnership with Google, one of the world’s most prominent tech companies, and the benefits it will offer our students,” said Michael D. Hartline, dean of the College of Business. “This collaboration reflects our ongoing commitment to prepare students for the transformative effects of AI on workplaces and society, ensuring they graduate with the relevant, in-demand skills necessary for a rapidly changing world.”

People Management Essentials is an eight-hour, self-paced course developed by the Google School for Leaders, Google’s center for leadership development. Taught by Google experts, the program equips new and aspiring managers with practical skills to build high-performing teams, set and achieve goals, support individual growth and invest in their own development.

A key feature is hands-on experience with AI tools such as Gemini and NotebookLM, empowering participants to incorporate artificial intelligence into their daily management activities — ranging from setting specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-bound (SMART) goals to developing project plans and customizing communications for a variety of audiences.

“At Google, we’ve seen firsthand how investing in managers creates a more effective, collaborative and supportive environment for all and drives business outcomes,” said Brian Glaser, chief learning officer at Google. “We believe the principles behind effective management are universal. By sharing what we’ve learned, we hope to empower leaders and their teams to thrive in any organization.”

Glaser added, “We believe that great managers create great teams. By making our foundational management principles accessible to everyone, we hope to empower the next generation of leaders to build a better future for teams, one manager at a time.”

His latest work examines how the AI chatbot could be changing the way people speak.

Through an analysis of some of the nation’s most popular tech industry podcasts, Juzek and his team compared the language used in the podcasts before and after the release of ChatGPT. They found a significant shift in the use of AI-related buzzwords such as “surpass,” “meticulous,” “strategically,” and “intricate,” indicating their increased usage.

“The buzzwords saw a significant shift between pre- and post-Chat GPT release, and the synonyms didn’t,” Juzek said. “The synonyms moved very little. It was quite a shift for such a short period of time when it comes to changes in spoken language.”

Juzek is part of FSU’s Department of Modern Languages and Linguistics in the College of Arts and Sciences. His research interests include the application of computational methods to linguistic questions, with a current focus on the features of AI-generated language, its impact on human language usage, and the causes that influence model behavior.

Research into how much AI is influencing language and behavior — such as how the technology might be accelerating language change or acting as an innovator — is still in its infancy, Juzek said.

“These models have some clear upsides and are genuinely useful tools, but open questions exist about unintended negative consequences for beliefs and behavior,” he said “With AI, it is premature to claim causation. Our current results are correlational. Next comes careful testing to see what is truly changing and why.”

Juzek noted a parallel between AI and social media: both have meaningful benefits alongside specific harms documented over time.

“Social media taught us that both can be true, but that good causal research takes time,” he added.

Juzek is available to speak on the following topics:

The latest insights into AI and language: What the newest analyses show about AI-associated word choices in modern speech.

A balanced view of impact: Clear benefits alongside open questions about unintended effects on language and behavior situated within the wider discourse on AI and society.

Why models behave this way: The technical mechanisms behind word overuse and how data and objectives shape style.

The human side of improvement, including the global annotation and content moderation workforce and concerns about working conditions.

State of the discourse and what’s next for the industry.

Researchers from the eHealth Lab at Florida State University’s School of Information have been evaluating the application of AI as a tool to aid health care providers in making more accurate patient diagnoses. The advancement has the potential to enhance treatment methods and improve patient outcomes.

Senior Author and Director for FSU’s Institute for Successful Longevity Zhe He and Visiting Assistant Professor Balu Bhasuran are among the co-authors on the multi-institutional research. The study has already garnered significant attention, with the paper being accessed more than 3,000 times since its publication in mid-March.

The paper, which was published in npj Digital Medicine, expands on FSU’s LabGenie project, a patient-engagement tool aimed at improving older adults’ understanding of lab test results.

The research team has been exploring the feasibility of using large language models (LLMs), a type of AI that learns from a large amount of text to answer questions accurately, to assist clinicians and improve differential diagnosis accuracy and efficiency. Differential diagnosis (DDx) is a critical step in clinical decision-making, helping health care providers distinguish between conditions with similar symptoms.

“The AI generated differential diagnosis is very comprehensive in covering all possible diagnoses for patients,” He said. “What this study helps show is how AI can potentially be used as a tool to help practitioners make more informed decisions for their patients.”

The study involved utilizing the LLMs to generate lists of the top one, five and ten DDx for clinicians’ evaluation. Researchers assessed the accuracy and predictive power of the LLMs and examined how incorporating lab test results impacted their diagnostic accuracy.

“What this study helps show is how AI can potentially be used as a tool to help practitioners make more informed decisions for their patients.”

– Zhe He, senior author and director for FSU’s Institute for Successful Longevity

The study tested five LLMs — GPT-4, GPT-3.5, Llama-2-70b, Claude-2 and Mixtral-8x7B — using clinical vignettes, or narrative patient-related cases, derived from 50 case reports. Their findings reveal that lab test data significantly improves diagnostic accuracy, with GPT-4 achieving the highest performance.

Specifically, GPT-4 achieved 55% top one accuracy and 60% top 10 accuracy with lab data, with lenient accuracy reaching 80%. Lab tests, including liver function, metabolic/toxicology panels and serology/immune tests, were generally interpreted correctly by the LLMs.

“When we asked the model for the top differential diagnosis, most of these models were able to produce the patient’s exact diagnosis,” Bhasuran said. “That’s very interesting because it implies that even in rare case diseases, the model is able to predict that.”

The research aims to help address well-known areas of concern often felt in health care settings from both the provider and patient perspective. Accurate diagnosis is crucial for effective patient management, directly influencing treatment decisions and overall patient outcomes. Reducing diagnostic errors helps streamline patient care, eliminating the need for excessive or repeated testing and ultimately lowering health care costs through reduced hospital stays and unnecessary procedures.

The work was supported by an Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality grant and partially supported by the University of Florida-Florida State University Clinical and Translational Science Award and the National Library of Medicine. It also included collaboration with Tampa General Hospital and coauthors from Florida State University, the National Library of Medicine, Emory University, University of South Florida and University of North Texas Health Science Center. FSU Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (UROP) students Angelique Deville, Hailey Thompson, Maggie Awad and Yash Alva assisted in extracting key information for the case reports.

Students from across campus participated in the 90-minute event, which was held in collaboration between FSU’s Innovation Hub, Graduate School and the Office of the Provost.

“Artificial intelligence in both teaching and research are two areas that are extremely important for our graduate students, especially those that are looking at careers in academia,” said Paul Marty, associate vice provost for academic innovation and sponsor of the event. “We have graduate students from all different programs on campus here talking together, and it shows how topics like artificial intelligence bring people together from all disciplines to learn and share ideas together.”

The workshop featured lectures from Michael Neal, associate professor in the Department of English; Joshua Morgan, academic affairs administrator at the Office of Faculty Development and Advancement; Kyung Kim, social sciences librarian; and Liz Dunne, instruction and reference librarian.

“It’s very important for Florida State University to embrace all new academic innovations. I feel really strongly that we are a university that is embracing innovation across academia, and one of the things we have to do is work with our students so they understand how those tools can be used and what their limitations are.”

— Paul Marty, associate vice provost for academic innovation

The workshop also included discussions on the ethical and effective use of AI tools. The speakers emphasized the university’s commitment to embracing innovation through artificial intelligence and highlighted how they deal with AI in their own professional lives and in the classroom setting.

“It’s very important for Florida State University to embrace all new academic innovations,” Marty said. “I feel really strongly that we are a university that is embracing innovation across academia, and one of the things we have to do is work with our students so they understand how those tools can be used and what their limitations are.”

Graduate students were also encouraged to utilize resources like the Innovation Hub and the Graduate Student Resource Center to further their academic and professional growth.

“I appreciated the opportunity to learn more about AI use in both classrooms and research and to discuss with fellow graduate teaching assistants from various departments their experiences with either combating or introducing it in the classroom,” said Emily Lu, Department of History doctoral student. “I teach Japanese history. I have an anti-generative AI policy in my course, but this workshop made me consider educating students on the ethical use of generative AI and the possibility of incorporating it into the classroom as an educational tool.”

The workshop resonated with many participants who appreciated the university’s efforts to stay at the forefront of technological advancements.

“It was very encouraging to see FSU’s proactive approach to innovative technologies by offering clear guidelines for effectively using generative AI in teaching and research,” said international and multicultural education student Amber Noor Mustafa. “I believe that AI is only as effective as the user’s query, and FSU’s guidance can empower researchers and educators to harness AI’s potential, keeping pace with cutting-edge global research. AI is here to stay, and as researchers, staying informed about the latest advancements is essential, while as educators, we must strive to stay a step ahead of our students to enrich their learning experiences.”

Graduates of the DASS program will be uniquely prepared for impactful careers at the intersection of data science and social science, with opportunities in various fields including social research, public policy, marketing, communications, business intelligence and academia.

“The Digital Applied Social Science graduate certificate provides students with insights into and hands-on experience with AI and big data on issues central to the social science and policy fields,” said Tim Chapin, dean of COSSPP. “This new certificate ensures that students are well-equipped to work on social and policy problems using the latest tools and frameworks, and that they enter the modern workforce with the skills and confidence to tackle these challenges.”

This 18-credit graduate certificate includes four core courses and two electives, teaching students how to gather data from databases, crowdsourcing and application programming interfaces (APIs). It also builds essential skills in data management, analysis and visualization to ensure accurate and efficient results.

Hands-on training in computational tools, such as network analysis, natural language processing and artificial intelligence (AI), prepares DASS students to engage with social challenges thoughtfully and effectively.

“This new certificate ensures that students are well-equipped to work on social and policy problems using the latest tools and frameworks, and that they enter the modern workforce with the skills and confidence to tackle these challenges.”

– Tim Chapin, dean of FSU’s College of Social Sciences and Public Policy

The program embraces an “ethics as practice” approach, which embeds ethical reasoning throughout the research process and emphasizes responsible use of digital data and tools.

The coursework equips students with the skills and knowledge to navigate information policy issues, with special attention to information ownership rights, privacy rights and public access to information. The approved course electives are offered by both COSSPP and CCI.

“Collaboration among disciplines provides the opportunity for students to gain more knowledge from more sources, and in ways they may not otherwise have imagined, to approach an issue or a topic,” said Dean Michelle Kazmer of the CCI. “We are proud to partner with the COSSPP for this certificate and thrilled to be able to provide students with a multidisciplinary approach that will inform their worldview as they enter the modern workforce and society.”

Admission is competitive, with applications for this cycle due by April 1, 2025. Students must apply in the spring each year for admission to start the certificate program in the fall semester or wait for the next application cycle.

Eligible applicants are graduate students with a 3.50 GPA currently enrolled in select colleges: Communication & Information, Social Sciences & Public Policy, Criminology & Criminal Justice, Social Work or Business. Students from other colleges and non-degree-seeking students are not eligible at this time.

The 2025 Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning Expo, AIMLX25, is set for 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday, Feb. 28 at the Challenger Learning Center in Tallahassee and is presented by the FSU Interdisciplinary Data Science Master’s Degree Program.

This year’s event, the fifth in the annual AIMLX series, centers on education and how AI and machine learning can enhance students’ academic work and professors’ teaching methods in the classroom. AIMLX25 attendees will explore how AI and machine learning can improve education through hands-on demonstrations and presentations by researchers in the fields of educational psychology, education, English, digital learning, communication and information, and more.

“The potential of AI resides in its ability to enhance automation, deliver individualized education and facilitate AI-based grading,” said Gordon Erlebacher, director of FSU’s Interdisciplinary Data Science Master’s Degree Program and professor of scientific computing. “The challenge comes in integrating these benefits while preserving the human element that AI cannot fully replace. Advancements in different fields such as health care — which was the theme of last year’s event — and education will become increasingly more accessible to the general population as research progresses.”

FSU researchers will present on topics including classroom practices, digital learning to prepare students for careers in the world of AI and more. Presenters hail from the College of Arts and Sciences; the Anne Spencer Daves College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences; the Office of Digital Learning and Academic Technologies; the College of Communication and Information and other FSU organizations.

“Our future with these technologies is imminent, and if we fail to harness their potential, we risk falling behind,” Erlebacher said. “AI has already demonstrated its capabilities in developing lesson plans, providing constructive feedback on assignments and other tasks. The potential applications are seemingly limitless, and skills that can be acquired from AI can empower individuals to harness their imagination and accomplish tasks that were once insurmountable just a few years ago.”

Associate Professor of English Michael Neal will share his research, “Decoupling Generative AI from Plagiarism: Toward a New Model of Authorship and Intellectual Property for Student Writers,” and discuss how equating AI with plagiarism doesn’t account for the thoughtful and legitimate uses of AI in academia and beyond.

“It’s important for people to have a healthy balance between skepticism and embracing new technologies,” Neal said. “Open-minded but critical and reflective uses of new technologies can help us integrate them well into educational spaces while considering potential consequences. Many people have strong opinions about AI without understanding it well, so the more voices we have contributing to AI and machine learning development discussions, the better equipped we’ll be to implement it in educational settings while thoughtfully addressing potential societal impacts.”

The expo’s keynote speaker, Fengfeng Ke, is the Clark Leadership Chair Professor of the College of Education at the University of Maryland. Her keynote address, “Learner Modeling in AI-Powered Simulations,” will cover her research into the design of personalized technology learning systems, such as games and simulations for use in math and science classrooms.

“The potential benefits of these technologies in society, particularly in health and education, are immeasurable within the next few years,” Erlebacher said. “We are witnessing history unfold in real time.”

NAI Senior Members are active faculty, scientists and administrators with success in patents, licensing and commercialization and have produced technologies that have had real impact on the welfare of society. Senior Members collectively hold more than 5,700 U.S. patents and represent over 100 NAI Member Institutions worldwide.

FSU’s 2025 inductees are Hoyong Chung, Yaacov Petscher, Prashant Singh and Branko Stefanovic. The university now has five Senior Members among its faculty.

“Congratulations to these FSU faculty members recognized by the National Academy of Inventors,” said Vice President for Research Stacey S. Patterson. “Their research is making lasting, positive change outside of the lab. The faculty honored by NAI come from four different colleges across Florida State, which speaks to the wide-ranging excellence and influence of FSU faculty.”

Chung is an associate professor in the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering. As a faculty member in the Department of Chemical and Biomedical Engineering and the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, his work spans traditional engineering disciplines to yield innovative breakthroughs in polymer science. He holds 16 patents.

He is developing renewable alternatives to petroleum-based polymers and polymers with controlled degradability and recyclability. Although some biomass-based polymer feedstocks exist, they often face challenges such as high costs, limited availability, poor performance and no methods for producing high-value functional materials.

He has focused on developing technologies to overcome those limitations, including a recent innovation that synthesizes polycarbonate from biomass lignin and carbon dioxide, resulting in a highly durable and infinitely recyclable polymer. That technology is now exclusively licensed to a biofuel company, which is using it to capitalize on lignin byproducts from biofuel production.

Chung has also developed adhesive polymers capable of bonding to both internal organs and skin, delivering drugs to targeted areas with precision and aiding in disease diagnosis. These advancements are licensed to a biomedical materials company, with potential applications in wound care, drug delivery and diagnostics.

Petscher is associate dean for research and professor in the College of Social Work, associate director of the Florida Center for Reading Research (FCRR) and director of the Quantitative Methodology and Innovation Division at FCRR. His work is focused on measurement, causal modeling, studying individual differences in reading using complex methodologies and the development of data-based assessments and tools to support literacy development.

He leads researchers who apply rigorous research methods and advanced statistical analyses to research related to improving social, educational, behavioral, psychological and emotional outcomes across the developmental spectrum from birth to adulthood. Their tools are licensed to educational publishers for use in schools.

Petscher is a co-inventor on four patents, including a system for using assessment without testing. This work is part of a collaboration with Cambium Learning Group, whose Core 5 reading development system has benefited more than 18 million students in the U.S. in making the critical shift from learning to read, to reading to learn.

Singh is an associate professor in the Anne Spencer Daves College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences who researches the development of rapid methods for the detection of foodborne pathogens. He holds two patents, with eight pending, for his research.

He has performed landmark work on developing methods for detecting seafood species identification and pathogenic Escherichia coli. In his recent research, he developed a quick and cost-effective method to test the authenticity of seafood samples. His testing solution was licensed by SeaD Consulting, a seafood company working on developing innovative solutions for the seafood industry. In the last six months, data collected using his seafood testing method has resulted in a wave of news reports revealing widespread mislabeling of shrimp species.

Data from Singh’s laboratory was used in a 2024 complaint to the Federal Trade Commission, which resulted in new FTC guidance for the restaurant industry on the illegality of misleading customers about the origin of seafood served — helping to ensure that customers are getting what they pay for.

Stefanovic is a professor in the College of Medicine who studies the molecular mechanisms of liver fibrosis. He holds four patents for research breakthroughs that have helped him to pioneer new antifibrotic drugs targeting the key molecular interaction of this mechanism.

Organ fibrosis is estimated to contribute to 45 percent of all deaths in the developed world. Efforts to develop treatments for the disease have yielded drugs that have serious side effects and are unsuitable for long term therapy.

Stefanovic discovered the molecular interactions that control excessive biosynthesis of type I collagen, the protein responsible for pathogenesis of fibrosis. His work has opened a new field in development of specific antifibrotic drugs, which are designed to specifically target the altered collagen biosynthetic pathway and represent first in class specific antifibrotic therapeutics.

Chung, Petscher, Singh and Stefanovic will join other new NAI Senior Members for an induction ceremony during the NAI annual meeting June 23-26 in Atlanta.

Visit the NAI website for a full list of Senior Members and more information about the Senior Members program.

Faculty, staff and researchers are using the latest AI tools and technologies in several ways: FAMU-FSU College of Engineering Dean Suvranu De led the development of an AI-powered tool that helps to train surgeons by analyzing video of their surgical technique and providing feedback; the College of Nursing launched the nation’s first master’s degree combining artificial intelligence and health care; Professors Hailey Kuang and Prashant Singh of the Anne Spencer Daves College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences are addressing food safety challenges with AI; the College of Law is integrating AI research into their curriculum to better equip their students for the future.

Paul Marty is a professor of information and associate vice provost for academic innovation at FSU. He works with faculty, staff and students to integrate new ideas into the university’s educational practices and help shape interdisciplinary cooperation.

Marty worked with FSU’s Information Technology Services and Office of Digital Learning to launch FSU’s official artificial intelligence website – ai.fsu.edu – to better detail the university’s commitment to student success through AI.

The academic innovator is excited about what the future holds at FSU, believing that AI can impact higher education in a positive way.

“What has me most excited about AI is how AI is leveraging academic innovation,” Marty said. “What people are realizing right now is that this is a great opportunity for us to change the way we teach and research and everything we do that is important in academia. All of this is an opportunity for us to reshape higher education.”

Paul Marty, Associate Vice Provost for Academic Innovation, Florida State University

What are some ways that AI is transforming higher education?
“When we think about how we’re using AI to leverage academic innovation on campus, the first step is to recognize that universities are no longer places where you go to acquire information, and they have not been in a very long time. Knowledge is not the rare commodity that it once was – knowledge is increasingly available to everyone with an internet connection, and in that world, what’s the role and purpose of universities? I’m sure we’ve all heard people ask, ‘Why go to university if you can learn the same thing online for free on YouTube?’ And my answer is that higher education is not about learning things – it’s about learning how to apply the things you learn, how to define problems and develop solutions to those problems. That’s how AI is reshaping higher education – by shifting the focus from learning things to lifelong learning, building human-human connections and developing an innovation mindset in our students.”

How do you see universities adapting to this rapid change?
“Universities are actually very good at handling disruptive technologies – calculators, personal computers, the internet and more. Academics have a lot of experience doing this going all the way back to the invention of writing. On the one hand, academia can be slow to change and resistant to change, but on the other hand, what history has shown us is that academics are very good at adopting disruptive technologies over time and changing the way they teach. Think about the way that math departments evolved their teaching around calculators or modern language departments evolved their teaching around Google Translate – we’ve done it before, and we’ll do it again. We know what we’re doing, and thanks to AI, we have the opportunity here to reshape what we consider important in higher education, so that we’re not just checking boxes for compliance but creating meaningful and engaged learning experiences for our students.”

How can we best ensure that AI is not a total replacement for human learning and training?
“In a world where access to AI is ubiquitous, where everyone has access to the same knowledge, the same information, the same data – where AI can give you the answers to the questions you ask – what will set humans apart from AI is how humans mediate those answers for other people. What you know will be far less important than how you know it and whether you can share that knowledge with other people with empathy, inspiration and critical thinking skills. And this is not new to AI – we’ve been saying this to our students forever – your technology skills are far less important than your people skills, your leadership skills and your management skills. If we want our students to succeed, then they need to be able to answer, ‘What’s your value add? What can you do that AI cannot? And our answer to that question is what makes us truly and uniquely human.’”
