CHAW, which operates under FSU’s University Health Services, was awarded a $20,000 grant to support the vaping prevention program. The university will implement a two-year strategic initiative to strengthen policy awareness and compliance, enhance cessation support through the EX® Program and expand student engagement and peer advocacy.

“This grant allows us to deepen our commitment to a healthier campus by empowering students with the tools and support they need to make informed choices and create a culture of wellness,” said Amy Magnuson, director of University Health Services.

A study published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine reveals that nicotine content in U.S. e-cigarettes has increased by nearly 250% since 2020, with the sharpest increases found in disposable e-cigarettes. One-third of all young people are at risk of addiction.

“FSU is committed in protecting the health and well-being of our students, employees and visitors,” said Amy Hecht, vice president for Student Affairs. “This grant helps our mission to advocate for health and wellness through our healthcare services and health education programs and courses to promote a healthy lifestyle.”

“This grant allows us to deepen our commitment to a healthier campus by empowering students with the tools and support they need to make informed choices and create a culture of wellness.”

– Amy Magnuson, director of University Health Services.

The grant will help cover training and the addition of several peer educators who will help lead student-driven initiatives and host seminars and tabling events.

“What is most exciting about this grant is that our students are at the center,” said Juan Abril, prevention coordinator for CHAW. “We’ll be working closely with student peer leaders to shape messaging, lead events and create change that is relevant and real to the student experience.”

Abril said he is grateful for the opportunity to provide vaping education and valuable resources to the FSU community. He said that while the grant is aimed to help students, FSU faculty and staff will be encouraged to engage with the programs and resources as well.

“Our goal isn’t to shame people or tell them what to do, but to offer evidence-based facts, support and resources in a way that connects with people,” he said. “Whether you’re thinking about quitting or wanting to understand more about the substances, we’re here to support your journey without judgment.”

The Tobacco/Nicotine-Free College Program has provided funding to more than 235 colleges, universities and college systems to advocate for and adopt a 100% tobacco-free policy since 2015. This is FSU’s first time applying for the grant.

Florida State University’s Amy Magnuson is the director of University Health Services (UHS) and a seasoned professional in the fields of nutrition, public health and wellness. Under her leadership, UHS was recently ranked No. 14 in the nation for “Best Health Services” according to the 2024 Princeton Review’s “Best Student Support for Counseling Services.”

As someone who provides strategic leadership and oversees comprehensive medical care, women’s health, and wellness for the FSU community, Magnuson offers important advice on the best ways to stay healthy all summer long.

“Summer is the perfect season to slow down and refocus on your well-being,” Magnuson said. “Whether you’re traveling, working, taking classes or simply enjoying a break from routine, small intentional choices can make a big difference. Health isn’t just physical – it’s about how you feel, connect and live. Take the long walk. Watch the sunset. Call a friend. Say yes to spontaneous joy. These moments matter more than any checklist.”

Magnuson offers five tips for summer health and wellness that can help individuals feel their best physically, mentally and emotionally. You can find these tips below.

SUMMER HEALTH AND WELLNESS TIPS FROM AMY MAGNUSON

Savor Seasonal, Local Foods

Summer is a celebration of fresh, nutrient-rich produce. Enjoy seasonal favorites like berries, tomatoes, peaches and summer squash, which are packed with vitamins, minerals and fiber. Eating seasonally not only supports your health but also promotes sustainability and strengthens local food systems. I encourage students to explore farmers’ markets or even try growing their own produce. Seasonal eating nourishes your body, supports your community and sustains the planet.

Hydrate with Intention

As a registered dietitian, I emphasize that hydration goes beyond just drinking water. Opt for non-caffeinated, unsweetened beverages throughout the day, and include hydrating, electrolyte-rich foods like watermelon, cucumbers and oranges. Hydration plays a key role in cognitive performance — especially for students tackling summer courses or internships. Hydration isn’t just about water — it’s about maintaining electrolyte balance to fuel your energy, focus and overall well-being.

Practice Smart Sun Safety

From a public health perspective, protecting your skin is essential. Use broad-spectrum sunscreen, wear UV-protective clothing and plan outdoor activities outside of peak sun hours. While moderate sun exposure supports vitamin D production, it’s crucial to balance that with skin protection. Sun safety is a public health priority — protecting your skin today safeguards your health for the future.

Move Your Body, Ease Your Mind

Physical activity — whether it’s walking, swimming or yoga — can be a powerful tool for stress relief and mood enhancement. During hot summer days, if you choose outdoor activities, aim for early morning or evening movement. The key is consistency and enjoyment, not intensity. Movement doesn’t have to be intense to be impactful — find what you love and let it energize you.

Prioritize Mental Wellness and Connection

Summer often brings a shift in routine, making it a perfect time to focus on mental well-being. Foster social connections, engage in mindfulness practices and seek mental health support when needed. Emotional wellness is just as vital as physical health. Summer is a time to reset — not just physically, but emotionally and socially.

She works with Remote Area Medical (RAM) clinics, a local dental clinic and FSU University Health Services to help provide accessible dental care to all populations.

Thomas also teaches other FSU students the importance of giving back through her work as the RAM Chapter founder, a biology lab teaching assistant, and through Alpha Chi Sigma, the professional chemistry fraternity.

What made you choose to come to Florida State University?

Florida State University is a school that feels like a second home. FSU has strong academics, outstanding faculty, groundbreaking research opportunities and endless classes to choose from. Outside the classroom, Tallahassee hosts an incredible community of people, with Southern hospitality and amazing food. FSU is a school that truly cares about its students, with nationally top-ranked health services, incredible student organizations and thriving campus life. From my first campus tour when I was 15, I immediately felt like I was at home.

What are some of your proudest achievements while attending FSU?

I earned my Dental Radiography Certification last year, which allowed me to become a licensed dental care provider with more opportunities to give back to my community. I have led the dental X-ray section of Remote Area Medical clinics, volunteered at other local clinics and worked as a dental assistant right here on campus. Being able to utilize my education to directly help people receive health care has been incredible and inspires me to attend dental school to be able to do even more.

Last November, the RAM executive board and I led a trip to Pensacola with 58 students to a pop-up clinic, which provided free medical, dental and vision services to more than 400 patients. The clinic director told us that if FSU had not come to this clinic, they would not have been able to see as many patients.

I am also the clinical volunteer trainer for Molar Express, a local pediatric dental office, that serves children covered by Medicaid. I began a partnership between this clinic and FSU’s Pre-Dental Society to help support this clinic’s needs. I have trained multiple members on clinical dental office skills, empowering more students to help our community.

How have you used your experiences at FSU to strengthen the local community?

Through founding FSU’s chapter of RAM, I have shown many FSU students the importance of rural health care and supporting all populations. Our members work as language interpreters, medical assistants, optician technicians, dental assistants, sterilization technicians and more. We strive to make more free clinics possible, and we are laying the foundation to one day host our own clinic in Tallahassee to support the community.

FSU’s Counseling & Psychological Services, or CAPS, ranks No. 13 in the education-services company’s Best Student Support and Counseling Services for 2024.

CAPS’ licensed and professionally trained staff offer counseling services to currently enrolled students through immediate triage services, one-on-one sessions, couples sessions, group sessions and around-the-clock crisis intervention services (850-644-TALK). These services are covered by student fees, meaning students have no out-of-pocket expense for any services they should need.

“Our mission at Counseling & Psychological Services is to promote access to innovative and individualized mental health services throughout our campus community,” said Carlos Gómez, director of CAPS. “The most meaningful aspect of this national recognition is that the ranking is grounded in feedback provided by our student community. Our students are our priority, and their acknowledgement of our efforts is incredibly meaningful to us.”

FSU’s University Health Services, or UHS, earned the No. 14 spot for Best Health Services.

UHS provides a full range of medical services and outreach programs with a focus on patient-centered care, public health, student development and staff development. Having a fully accredited, on-campus primary care facility allows UHS to bring care and services directly to students when they may need them most.

“We are so humbled to be recognized again for the amazing efforts of our health care providers, nurses and staff,” said Amy Magnuson, director of UHS. “This past year, we’ve made it even easier for students to access high-quality care through enhanced online scheduling and our agreements with additional health insurance carriers that give students more variety in options.”
