She balances her clinical work with doctoral research on “sandwiched” caregivers, adults who simultaneously care for aging parents and dependent children. Her goal is to inform national policies that provide better support for caregivers.

Outler’s research has taken her to Japan, Scotland and Norway for the International Family Therapy Association conferences. She has also contributed to multiple peer-reviewed articles.

Outler also brings her research and clinical experience into the classroom, where she mentors undergraduate students in the Anne Spencer Daves College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences.

Why did you choose FSU?

FSU’s Marriage and Family Therapy department is a top training program. I was drawn to the opportunities to expand my research, clinical and teaching skills under the mentorship of knowledgeable and supportive faculty.

During my campus visit, I quickly fell in love with the university and its extensive resources for students. I saw not only a place where I could advance academically, but a community where I could grow both as a scholar and as a person.

What academic achievements are you most proud of?

I secured competitive external funding to support my dissertation research on sandwiched caregivers. I was honored to receive three funding resources: the American Dissertation Fellowship from the American Association of University Women (AAUW), the Doctoral Dissertation Grant from the Mental Research Institute and the Dissertation Grant from The Foundation for the Contemporary Family.

These awards affirmed the importance of my research, provided the resources necessary to give back to my participants and the ability to travel to disseminate my findings.

How do you serve the FSU community?

I provide therapy at the FSU Center for Couple and Family Therapy and the FSU Multidisciplinary Center. In these settings, I work with individuals, couples, families and groups facing a range of presenting concerns.

I also serve as an on-call victim advocate, providing confidential crisis support to FSU students, faculty and staff who have experienced victimization. Witnessing clients’ resilience and growth continually reinforces why I chose this profession. This work reminds me of the importance of small, relational moments amid the larger systems that shape clients’ lives.

Watkins immersed herself in Spanish culture at the FSU campus in Valencia, Spain, for the summer of 2024 under the Brooks Rogers scholarship. She attended the biological anthropology field school in Chelva, a region out of Valencia, where she learned the techniques of bioarchaeology by studying and cataloging a victim of the Spanish Civil War.

After her time abroad, Watkins researched under the Tyler Fellowship within the IDEA Grant program, and she is now pursuing the Global Citizenship Certification.

Inspired by her studies, Watkins’ current research focuses on telling stories of the Spanish Civil War through stop-motion animation. She promotes the importance of artists in research because they have the capability to build community and represent emotion.

Through these efforts, Watkins uniquely applies her artistic abilities in telling stories that connect people and uplift vulnerable communities.

Why did you choose to attend Florida State University?

I chose FSU over all other universities because I wanted a holistic perspective of university life with many strengths outside of the arts. For me, at the top of my list of importance was to have a broad and strong list of disciplines that create a well-rounded student body and staff. I was unsure of the path I wanted to take out of high school, so a big university with a multitude of options was ideal for me to be able to explore every avenue, and I continue to reap those benefits.

What academic achievements have you accomplished at FSU?

My most significant academic accomplishments thus far while at FSU include my summer with FSU International Programs studying abroad in Valencia, participating at the biological anthropology field school in Chelva, Spain.

I also stayed in The Conventual Franciscans, where St. Francis de Assisi famously founded the order of the Franciscans in the 14th century. I learned about the history of the region of Valencia, dating all the way back to its creation. This time is what inspired me on my first visit to Valencia to continue my research here, as Spain is often disregarded in the global discussion about the history of fascism.

The Spanish song “Tatuaje,” by Concha Piquer, inspired my deep dive in this area. It highlights the cultural aspect of mourning loss while staying strong that the Spaniards exhibited during this time of history. In response to this work, I will continue my artistic research as a stop-motion animation. I’m proud to have received an IDEA Grant award to fund this work, and I will be defending the animation through Honors in the Major.

How do you serve the FSU community?

My most significant contribution beyond the classroom at FSU has been my time working for Assistant Professor Katie Kehoe in the College of Fine Arts as an art researcher in 2024 for the engaged art initiative in Steinhatchee, Florida. I planted fruit trees and bushes for a community dedication event that honors members of the community who exemplified resilience in the wake of Hurricane Helene. It was an experience I am honored to have been a part of as someone who was greatly impacted by Hurricane Michael in my hometown of Panama City, Florida.

Additionally, her passion to support mental health led her to create a Mental Health Day proposal, which garnered support from both FSU and FAMU.

Maglin’s work extends to the state level, where she influenced legislation promoting mental health awareness.

What impacted your decision to attend FSU?

FSU offered the most well-rounded experience possible. Not only does Florida State boast a world-renowned psychology program that would best suit my major and academic interests, but Florida State also has a wonderfully diverse student life and countless opportunities for involvement. During my senior year of high school, I was able to visit a friend in her junior year at Florida State. Before I applied, she gave me a tour of the campus, major student hubs, student amenities and more.

After this visit, I fell in love with Florida State and applied. The COVID-19 pandemic struck in the last half of my senior year, so I could not go on any college tours with my family. Had I not seen the livelihood and diversity of FSU, I may not have attended. Also, I am a recipient of the Bright Futures Scholarship. Without this scholarship, I would not have been able to attend Florida State University, much less any university.

How have FSU’s programs supported your academic development?

I had the privilege of participating in UROP during the 2021-2022 academic year. UROP requires students to contribute to ongoing university research, selecting one project across many disciplines. While in the program, I had the honor of joining the Chelko Lab in the College of Medicine. The Chelko Lab, led by Dr. Stephen Chelko, specializes in the understanding and treatment of arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy. In this lab, I helped prepare samples of DNA, run polymerase chain reactions, perform echocardiograms and echo ultrasound exams on experimental mice and other laboratory tasks.

At the end of the 2021-2022 academic year, I had to compile Dr. Chelko’s research into a poster to be presented at the 2022 Undergraduate Research Symposium (URS). At URS, I presented the work I had been contributing to over the year to my colleagues and to members of Dr. Chelko’s lab. After I participated in the UROP program, I remained an undergraduate member of the Chelko Lab, contributing to his research for the past three years.

How have you developed your passion for mental health?

I have had the opportunity to join several extracurricular activities, most notably within the Student Government Association. In the 2022 spring semester, I represented the College of Arts and Sciences on Student Senate. I decided to use my new position to promote my longstanding passion for mental health. Throughout my term, I dedicated my efforts toward developing a logistical outline for a Mental Health Day to be implemented into the university’s academic calendar. This project, which spanned over six months, required intensive collaboration with university administrators, faculty and student leaders. After refining the outline and solidifying support from various entities, I presented the proposal to the student senate via Resolution 26.

After unanimous approval from Student Senate, I was able to bring the initiative back to Florida State’s administration to continue efforts toward implementation. The work I was able to accomplish in this role was life-changing and my most significant leadership position during my time at Florida State. Student Senate introduced me to a variety of student organizations. I served as the assistant director of the Mental Health Council and used this leadership role to de-stigmatize, promote awareness of and encouraged mental health. These two leadership roles allowed me to act on my passion for mental health while developing a professional passion for activism and the law.

Can you describe your impact on the Tallahassee community and beyond?

The work that I have done as both a student senator and as assistant director of the Mental Health Council positively contributed to Florida State, Tallahassee and essentially the state of Florida. I took the Mental Health Day initiative to the state level. I took the proposal to a state senator, who transformed my idea into a sweeping resolution, entitled Sunshine Day, which encouraged all universities in Florida to adopt a similar measure on their campuses in the name of mental health and recognition.

Though implementation rests on the administrators and student leaders at each university, the initiative has the potential to positively impact thousands of students across the state and improve overall student mental health in Florida.

As assistant director of the Mental Health Council, I have organized and planned several events to benefit student mental health and increase resource awareness. Most recently, I was able to host local vendors on FSU’s campus to alleviate student stress and provide an outlet away from academic and personal stressors.

She was inducted into Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing and served as the service director of the Phi Eta Sigma honor society, organizing road cleanups, book and food drives and participating in fundraising events like Relay For Life through the American Cancer Society.

Hines is also a member of the Kappa Epsilon chapter of the Delta Sigma Theta sorority and works as a learning assistant helping her peers academically in various subjects.

How has your nursing major shaped your FSU journey?

I chose to attend FSU for their nursing program. I want to able to care for others at the highest level and I knew that they have one of the highest NCLEX pass rates in Florida. FSU has given me so many opportunities in the classroom and clinical setting to do so, especially in spaces such as Tallahassee Memorial Hospital, HCA Florida Capital Hospital, Florida State Hospital, PruittHealth and Wolfson’s Children’s Hospital.

It has allowed me to see a piece of what our world looks like in the sense of diversity and to see a myriad of scenarios regarding someone’s health care. I never know what my day is going to look like when I walk through the doors of a facility. But each time I leave, I know that I have made an impact on someone’s day and have learned something valuable along the way.

What is your most significant academic accomplishment?

My most significant academic accomplishment was getting inducted into the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing. To be inducted, you must earn at least a 3.5 GPA. I’ve always taken pride in my education, and I am thankful that I have had the opportunity to do so at FSU. Nursing school is challenging, but to be able to maintain my GPA, care for others and serve my community makes the challenge easier and more enjoyable.

How has your commitment to community service helped others at FSU and beyond?

As the service director of the Phi Eta Sigma honor society, I believe in the power of community service to create meaningful change and am dedicated to utilizing my position to serve FSU students and the broader community alike. I have had the opportunity to organize road cleanups, book and food drives and participate in the cancer research fundraising event Relay For Life.

What is your role in the Learning Assistant Program?

As a learning assistant, I help students in college algebra, precalculus and foundations in nursing practice understand difficult topics and help them grow during the learning journey. I have learned that I cannot take the lead when it comes to solving something or working a problem out. I have to let the students make the connections between concepts otherwise I am just doing it for them. Taking things step-by-step and reassuring the student that they have seen the information before ensures their confidence, making them eager to seek out the big picture and achieve mastery. When they do, it is a rewarding feeling.

I am also here for the students in other ways, pointing them in the direction of whatever on-campus resources they may need, such as counseling, food assistance or housing assistance. I made it known that I was here for them during their time at FSU and that I wanted to see them succeed.

What made you interested in caring for others, and how has FSU helped you pursue that passion?

I was always told by my parents to take care of those around you, especially of those in your community. I enjoy helping others and seeing their appreciation only warms my heart. That feeling makes me want to help more often and knowing that I can only make things easier. FSU has helped me pursue that passion by offering many opportunities when it comes to clubs, interest groups and more.

I had very little knowledge of either before I started the project, and I became a lot more fluent in both. Presenting my research helped to enhance my communication skills and allowed me to network with researchers from different backgrounds.

How are you engaged outside the classroom?

Beyond the classroom, I served as a volunteer for the Florida Georgia Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation at the Tallahassee Science Festival, where I interacted with children and families through various experiments related to the science of colors. Additionally, I founded the Future Physicists Society, which aims to provide resources and opportunities for undergraduate physics majors and STEM students. FPS organized workshops on research experiences, resume building, and internship events, as well as facilitated visits to national laboratories like the MagLab and planned tours to the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory in Louisiana to broaden members’ exposure to the field.

How do you think your community service activities have positively impacted the community or individuals you’ve served?

At the Tallahassee Science Festival, our engagement with young children sparked curiosity and critical thinking about science, evident through their insightful questions and active participation. The increasing turnout of families at subsequent events underscored the festival’s positive impact on the community. Within FPS, our regular meetings attract 10 to 12 attendees who benefit from workshops on research opportunities and career resources. Participants particularly enjoy National Lab tours, which offer a different perspective on physics, emphasizing exploration and discovery.

Through programs like the Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (UROP) and leadership roles in organizations like Global Dental Brigades, Thomas has demonstrated a commitment to academic excellence, community service and social impact throughout her time at FSU.

How did FSU stick out to you when you were applying to colleges and post-secondary institutions?

I chose FSU for its abundant involvement opportunities and a strong emphasis on a liberal arts education, which promised a diverse and enriching academic experience. The university’s commitment to research, coupled with its broad general education curriculum, assured me that I could pursue my interests while graduating as a well-rounded individual, constantly pushing my boundaries and exploring new opportunities.

What was your favorite academic opportunity?

Through the UROP program, I delved into environmental science research under Stephanie Pau’s guidance, investigating climate change’s impact on Hawaiian plant species. Immersed in the Pau lab, I collaborated with graduate students and presented our findings at the Florida Undergraduate Research Conference. Transitioning to Angela Knapp’s lab, I now analyze water samples for phosphorus concentrations.

Consistently making the FSU President’s list underscores my commitment to academic excellence, supported by dedicated professors who have enriched my learning experience and expanded my worldview.

How do your professional goals align with community services initiatives?

As a freshman, I became the founding treasurer of Dental Brigades, a student organization focused on community service. I played a pivotal role in organizing fundraising events and coordinating a dental service trip to Panama, where other members and I provided dental care to rural communities. Now serving as the vice president, I continue to lead efforts to engage members in local dental experiences and coordinate volunteer opportunities in Tallahassee, emphasizing oral health education as a means of community service and building a foundation of robust oral health.

How do you help cultivate a culture of service and collaboration at FSU through leadership?

Throughout my time at FSU, I’ve leveraged my academic drive and collaborative spirit to inspire others. As a learning assistant in Biology II, I mentored students and created a nurturing environment for academic exploration. In addition, as a future pre-health Freshman Interest Group leader and through my involvement with Dental Brigades, I continue to mentor and encourage students, expanding dental education and promoting service within the community.

What was your favorite academic experience?

Being named a Sustainability Fellow during the spring 2023 semester marked one of my most significant academic achievements at Florida State University. In this role, I interned with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, focusing on developing the agency’s website and collecting data on waste management programs across Florida’s counties. By the end of my internship, I had gathered data for over 20 counties, gaining valuable insights into sustainability issues and enhancing my skills in data collection and analysis. Building on this experience, I collaborated with Laurie Molina, program director for the Geography Education and Technology Program, to develop a proposal aimed at increasing citizen participation in sustainable initiatives. It was great to creatively impact social change within an educational setting and apply theoretical knowledge to real-world challenges.

How did your experience with Food for Thought Pantry shape your perspective on community service and social responsibility?

One of my most impactful community service experiences at Florida State University was with the Food for Thought Pantry on campus. Through collaboration between the Presidential Scholars program and FFTP, I contributed to the Beat UF/Beat Hunger food drive by promoting it across campus, collecting donations and organizing pantry items.

In the subsequent spring semester, I worked with a fellow Presidential Scholar to create a digital recipe book to support students using the pantry, focusing on recipes using available ingredients. With input from FFTP’s supervisor and a dietitian, I helped develop over 70 recipes and launched a social media campaign to raise awareness about food insecurity and the recipe book. I also hosted an event at FFTP, serving 30 students and distributing the recipe book. This experience deepened my understanding of food insecurity challenges and the importance of providing practical support, fulfilling a genuine need within the campus community.

What was your most meaningful leadership accomplishment or project experience?

I really enjoyed serving as an Engage 100 leader, lead team member and intern. As an Engage 100 leader, I facilitated courses, honing skills in public speaking, problem-solving and time management while supporting student transitions to college life. My passion for the organization led me to join the lead team, where I mentored other leaders, facilitated communication and organized program events. Transitioning to an Engage 100 program assistant, I played a pivotal role in program operations, leading workshops, organizing meetings and contributing to curriculum development. Overall, my journey through the Engage 100 program has been transformative, allowing me to develop leadership skills, foster meaningful connections and make a tangible impact within my university community.

How have you made an impact on your community?

Throughout my time at Florida State University, I have had a variety of opportunities to make an impact here on campus, within the greater Tallahassee community and throughout the state of Florida. Serving as an Engage 100 leader, lead team member and Engage 100 program assistant, I facilitated student transitions, fostered an welcoming environment and contributed to program enhancements, which all helped to make a lasting impact on future students and leaders.

My involvement with the Food for Thought Pantry addressed food insecurity through direct service and resource development. Additionally, my participation in the Breaking Bread Together community dinners allowed me to engage deeply with community members, contributing valuable insights to organizations addressing food insecurity. My role as a Sustainability Fellow empowered me to contribute to environmental conservation efforts statewide by creating a database of waste management programs, promoting informed decision-making and awareness.

Brophy is part of the FSU Applied Politics and Policy Learning Experience (APPLE) Program, which includes a course on urban politics in the fall, an internship in the spring and a scholarship at the Washington Center in the summer.

“APPLE has given me opportunities that would be otherwise unattainable,” Brophy said. “Not only has it provided me with an invaluable network of people — both students and professionals — but with real world skills that will serve me for the rest of my career.”

Brophy has also worked as an intern for the Florida House Minority Office and then the National Legal Aid and Defender Association in Washington, D.C. She worked for the Washington Center where she was accepted into the Morgan Stanley Ambassadors Program. The program is a partnership between the Washington Center and the U.S.-Japan Council and is funded by Morgan Stanley.

“While in the Morgan Stanley Ambassadors Program, I was able to work with five other American students and nine Japanese students to solve issues in civil society and network with executives at large corporations, CEOs of nonprofits, and academics across the country,” she said.

Brophy’s interest in U.S.-Japanese relations does not stop there. She participated in “The Shogun’s Grand Niece,” a research project led by Annika Culver, professor of East Asian History at FSU, that tracked the history and relationship between Japan and the United States by following a Japanese noble family’s experience living in America. The research was presented at both the Florida Undergraduate Research Conference (FURC) and the FSU Undergraduate Research Symposium.

“My research area focused on this family’s experience during World War II, the father’s life in the internment camp and how politics and prejudice played a role in the downfall,” Brophy said. “My research uncovered the intricacies of race relations in the United States, gender roles and norms between cultures and how disaster can lead to mass hysteria.”

Brophy is also the president of the Rosenstraße Foundation, which strives to commemorate the Rosenstraße Protests and inspire civil courage by giving students the opportunity to listen to preeminent speakers and undertake their own research. As president, Brophy plans events, coordinates speakers, conducts research and helps mentor fellow researchers. She is also an Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (UROP) leader and co-teaches a class of 12 undergraduate researchers.

Brophy’s contributions to her community go beyond what she does on campus. Since February 2023, she has been involved in community service through Tallahassee’s International Rescue Committee, an organization that provides opportunities for refugees, asylees and human trafficking victims to rebuild their lives. Brophy worked as a peer mentor helping a family of five children acclimate to the United States, where she helped them with homework and planned outings to show them the city of Tallahassee and all the opportunities it has to offer.

Brophy turned this experience into an internship in refugee resettlement and policy and outreach work. With her experience in policy work, Brophy contributes to the organization’s understanding of the legislative session and how the legislative intent and content of bills affect the organization.

After graduation, Brophy plans to become a Foreign Service Officer before becoming a foreign policy analyst on Capitol Hill.

What were the biggest takeaways from your legislative internships?

My family and I have always been very involved in different service organizations and that experience showed me how much legislative work influences everyday people. I found that I loved the process and research involved so I decided to intern with my local state representative. My legislative internship taught me how to become passionate about things solely because they help people. Every task you are presented with is not going to be your favorite, but it’s important for causes larger than yourself.

How have your experiences at FSU impacted your career goals?

FSU has absolutely helped shape what I want to do in the future. Right now, the plan is to become a Foreign Service Officer before working on foreign policy in the legislature. I found this passion by attending an FSUShadow opportunity. The Political Science Department also offers an amazing program called APPLE (Applied Politics and Policy Learning Experience) which allowed me to go to D.C. this summer where I interned and took a class from an employee of the Department of Defense.

How has FSU helped you solidify your passions?

I have had an amazing experience at Florida State and there are so many people that have helped me get where I am. My research mentors, Annika Culver and Nathan Stoltzfus, in the Department of History really opened my eyes to how much I love research and the importance of historical events when looking at how and why leaders make decisions. Amanda Driscoll in the College of Social Sciences and Public Policy has also served as a guiding force in the political science major and was an absolutely amazing mentor.

What resources offered by FSU did you find the most useful?

TJ Johnson at the Career Center has been, hands down, one of the best resources at Florida State University. He will be your personal cheerleader while also giving you the feedback you really need. The Center for Leadership and Service has served as a place for me to find community and get involved in meaningful service. The political science department and its APPLE Program was a life-changing experience that allowed me to truly grow to my fullest professional and personal potential.

What advice would you give to incoming students who want to get involved with legislative work?

I would tell incoming students to find their passion and dedicate themselves to it. If you want to work at the Capitol, find a legislator who shares your interests and passions and put your all into it! Your dedication will shine through, even as a freshman. It’s also important to remember that there are many different ways to be involved in the legislature that don’t include being an intern for a legislator. There are countless agencies and lobbyist groups in Tallahassee that are a great starting point.

That is precisely what they found at Florida State University.

“I chose to attend FSU because of the university’s commitment to arts research,” Mills said. “As a double major in creative writing and studio art, it was important to me to attend a university that supported both of my chosen disciplines.”

Mills is an interdisciplinary artist whose work crosses the boundaries between visual art and writing through various methods including collages, drawing, machine and hand embroideries, screen printing and more.

“As an artist and writer, I try to identify the language of the powerful and subvert it,” Mills said. “I want people to question ‘objective’ language and I want to offer an alternative: language that is resistant to easy meaning or clear understanding.

With studio space at the Carnaghi Arts Building, part of the College of Fine Arts, Mills spends time working on techniques, projects and ideas. Their work ranges from paintings and drawings to sculptures, fiber art, video and printmaking, often incorporating the written word.

Mills’ latest project, “Something Still Living,” is a mixed media work that merges fabric and poetry.

“The studio space has given me the opportunity to create large-scale work, professional documentation and exhibit in student galleries,” Mills said. “It’s a center for both my visual art and English research.”

Inspired by their grandparents who were also artists, Mills’ passion began early in childhood. During their time at FSU, Mills has taken a more avant-garde approach to art.

“There is a focus on interpretation and abstraction in art that is very appealing to me,” Mills said, “I don’t like to claim things that I’m not sure of, or to make arguments I don’t believe in entirely. Art is always muddy, always interpretative —there’s always some give.”

Mills credits their peers and professors as inspiration for their artistic vision. In The English Department, part of the College of Arts and Sciences, Professor Diane Roberts and doctoral candidate Landis Grenville pushed Mills as a writer and thinker and connected them to poetry.

In the Department of Art, Mills commends Professor Kevin Curry who pushed them to work intuitively, toward the sublime and against art that is clearly defined or easily understandable. Tenee’ Hart introduced them to many new methods of creating and expressing themselves.

“I have been so incredibly lucky to find many wonderful and influential instructors here at FSU,” Mills said.

Carrie Ann Baade, a professor in the Department of Art, encouraged Mills to apply for an IDEA Grant to support their Honors in the Major thesis for Creative Writing, which they received.

“Among the thousands of students who received an IDEA Grant, Andy stands out with exceptional distinction,” Baade said. “Their work captivates attention and holds an undeniable allure that demands recognition. As an award-winning artist recently shown in museums, Andy’s art is informed by their love of text, which is sewn and worn in their fashion and installation-based creations.”

The project, “Good: Five Short Stories,” will be a collection of short fiction stories about a 1970’s era groupie and her toxic relationships with a rock ‘n’ roll star. The stories culminate in a grander novel, while also working as standalone pieces. Mills is currently seeking publication.

“Funding is incredibly important to artistic growth,” Mills said. “The scholarships and awards I have received while at FSU have allowed me to buy the equipment and supplies that have expanded my craft. Florida State has given me ample support.”

Mills’ artwork has also been displayed beyond the classroom. Their artwork was featured at the City Hall Art Gallery and LeMoyne Arts in Tallahassee, as well as in the Greenville Museum of Art in North Carolina and the Dorothy Uber Bryan Gallery at Bowling Green State University in Ohio. Mills’ writing has been published in the Exposition Review, an independent multi-genre literary journal, where it was nominated for a Pushcart prize.

How important is it to attend a university that values the arts?

Art offers a unique way to interact with the world. Art focuses on perception, creation and elaboration on the observable world. For me, this extends into history, literature and biology. Within the university setting, art allows students to think outside of traditional academic inquiry whilst still utilizing the resources, facilities and philosophies of an R1 academic institution. As an artist who is very research driven, attending a university like FSU has been vital to my growth.

How will the IDEA grant further allow you to learn about your interests and express your art?

The IDEA Grant has allowed me to cultivate my research tools and sharpen my writing skills. It has given me the opportunity to realize my proposed short story collection, and the security of the grant allowed me to play with artistic experimentation and risk, altering existing forms and creating new ones entirely. Currently, I am pursuing publication for the short stories in the collection.

How are you able to blend both studio art and creative writing into your own unique craft?

I think about my practice as a resistance to clarity. I see art as an opportunity to not make sense. Oftentimes, my visual art engages directly with text. In my work, narratives are disrupted, sentences are abstracted and words are consumed. This happens literally as text is pricked and printed into being, collaged, manipulated, torn and twisted. My practice is concerned with the ultimate reconfiguration of meaning. We are constantly surrounded by language that is purportedly objective, logical and unemotional. Our lives are determined by this kind of language. Think about the way laws are written – supposedly direct and dispassionate. But in reality, legal language is highly emotional and intensely subjective. Another example is the language on street signs. Here, the language has to be clear and discernible, otherwise daily life would not be livable. And yet, even this language is biased. Roads get named and renamed after political figures – street signs are political, and they say a lot about who is in power.

What advice would you give to incoming art students?

Experiment. Try an entirely new medium, utilize your access to the labs, use your studio, apply for awards, do an honors project, submit your work to professional shows and publications, meet other artists, foster productive relationships with your mentors, go to galleries and museums and read art publications. Ask how they would describe their artwork to a general audience. If they are a writer and visual artist, ask them for a detailed description of what they produce.

After touring Florida State University and learning about the campus organizations, Krassel knew it was the right fit for him.

Krassel’s passion for science began as a Boy Scout when he learned about basic first aid training and biology. While at FSU, Krassel has participated in clubs and organizations that allow him to explore his passion, specifically the Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (UROP) and FSU Medical Response Unit (MRU).

Through UROP, Krassel learned about various labs, like the Hickner Laboratory within the College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences, where he gained experience in researching and collaborating with professionals.

“By collaborating with the post-docs, doctoral candidates and my research mentor, I delved into fascinating topics such as investigating how elevated free radical concentrations affect cardiovascular health, and transformed that fascination into tangible, hands-on experimental setups,” Krassel said.

Through his involvement in MRU, Krassel found a community of like-minded people who support him in his endeavors.

“I found a deeper understanding of what a community truly means,” Krassel said. “It’s not just a place where you find like-minded people; it’s a place where you can grow, learn and pursue your dreams. That is precisely what the MRU has done for me.”

Krassel’s involvement in the university goes beyond organizations. As a study group leader for his General Chemistry II class, he learned the importance of working with peers and gaining new perspectives. This opportunity inspired him to become a leader in his professional career.

“This experience was instrumental in shaping my ongoing journey toward becoming a future physician,” he said. “It exposed me to the diverse and unique roles that leadership plays within the structure of a team, underscoring the importance of effective community-based learning and communication in the academic setting.”

Upon graduation, he plans to attend medical school with aspirations to become a cardiologist.

“My passion for human health and helping others propels me to pursue a career as a cardiologist and instills in me the belief that I can make a substantial and meaningful difference in the lives of everyday people,” he said.

What inspired you to get a degree in biological science?

The inspiration for pursuing a degree in biological science traces its roots back to my early years in the Boy Scouts. One of the merit badges offered was the First Aid merit badge where we learned about various medical interventions such as splinting and wound care as well as a basic understanding of human biology. This initial exposure to biology made me seek other ways to learn about the sciences. When the time came to apply to colleges, I knew that pursuing a biological science degree was the perfect fit for my interests. I realized that within this field, I could explore various facets of science and eventually pinpoint where my true passions lay in this expansive discipline. As I continued my academic journey and gained exposure to career options in the field, I discovered my profound passion for medicine. This revelation marked the beginning of my focused path along the medical education track.

How has UROP (Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program) helped stimulate and grow your passions in the science field?

Participating in UROP has been one of the most rewarding experiences during my time at FSU. The invaluable guidance I received from my UROP leader during our biweekly class meetings provided me with insights that proved instrumental in gaining practical experience that aligned with my future goals and helped me identify labs that matched my interests. I had the opportunity to apply to several outstanding labs and ultimately secured a position in an exercise physiology lab. That experience empowered me to present on physiological subjects at multiple FSU-based symposiums, including the President’s Undergraduate Research Showcase. My time and exposure in this lab facilitated meaningful connections with faculty and staff on both an academic and personal level. It greatly contributed to my burgeoning interest in the field of clinical research and medicine, solidifying my commitment to this path.

How have you found your community with FSU Medical Response Unit (MRU) and what have you learned through this organization?

The MRU was not initially on my radar. However, after about a month on campus, I could not help but notice students in cargo pants with medical response packs, and I became increasingly curious about how I could become part of this unique organization. Joining the MRU provided me with the opportunity to make friends with whom I would go on to take many classes and form a close-knit group. We could rely on each other for academic support, whether it was studying for difficult classes or venting about the challenges of school.

What did you learn about yourself when you became study group leader for your class and how has this inspired leadership in your everyday life?

I discovered a genuine passion for discussing various topics that were not only relevant to me but also resonated with my peers. Engaging in discussions not only allowed me to see fresh perspectives on the subject matter but also deepened my understanding of the material in ways that studying on my own could not provide. It brought me closer to my fellow students, leading to the development of lifelong friendships. Experiencing leadership, even on a small scale within the study groups, revealed to me the mutually beneficial relationships that a leader can establish with those around them. This experience afforded me a great deal of personal growth and is one of the select few experiences I hold as a great motivational tool for my future pursuits.

After a successful audition at the College of Music, Gelasco put Florida State University on her radar. However, it wasn’t until she learned about FSU’s science and research programs that she decided to attend.

Gelasco has taken advantage of FSU’s dual degree program to pursue both passions, which, as opposing as they seem, contribute to her success in each respective field.

“Just like the saying that it’s ‘exercising both parts of the brain,’ music keeps me from burning out during my science studies and being in the lab allows me to explore the inquisitive side of being in STEM,” Gelasco said.

Last year, Gelasco became one of the youngest members of the majority graduate-level ensemble for the University Symphony Orchestra and participated in their first international tour, which ended in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

During one of the performances, FSU students played side-by-side with a local youth orchestra based in Santo Domingo, using music as a nonverbal tool to communicate and express themselves.

“To be able to expose people to incredible music and inspire youth to continue to play no matter their circumstances reminds me that art is essential to every community,” Gelasco said.

When she’s not on an international tour, Gelasco conducts research in the Lab of Hong Li, professor of chemistry and biochemistry, where she engineers CRISPR-Cas9 proteins, which are used to remove, add or alter sections of a DNA sequence. Through her Phi Eta Sigma Undergraduate Research Award and guidance from Professor Li, Gelasco is preparing to pursue a doctoral degree in biomedical sciences.

“I enjoy the collaborative but competitive nature of research, as well as continuously learning, and want to experience that in my career,” Gelasco said.

Gelasco’s passion for science extends through her leadership in Alpha Chi Sigma, the national chemistry fraternity. As alumni secretary, Gelasco organizes panels and workshops to prepare her fellow members for their respective careers.

Through ambition, passion and service, Gelasco hopes to continue to be a leader in her future endeavors.

How do you feel that music and STEM correlate?

Despite that both fields and careers are very different, both areas are very creative. The more you get into research, the more you see the importance of creativity in experimental design and the patience it takes to see results, similar to musicians having patience during practice. Although both are time-consuming in their own ways, I feel very balanced by the seemingly opposing fields. Both are very interactive, and you get out what you put in, which has been a challenging but fun journey for me throughout my undergraduate studies.

What is your fondest memory from your international orchestra tour?

My fondest memory was after the children’s concert in Santiago, Dominican Republic, when one of the hosts walked up to me and pointed to a girl around the age of 10 and said, “She wants to take a picture with you.” The little girl came up to me and we attempted to communicate with her speaking very slowly for me and with my very limited Spanish. Soon a group of seven other students came over to join in the picture. I felt very moved that all these young female cellists were so excited to take pictures with us and were inspired by our performance. This trip was life-changing, and we were exposed to a completely new culture where almost none of us spoke the language. I really felt the “universal language” that music provides for us all.

How has FSU’s science program prepared you to pursue a Ph.D. in biomedical sciences?

My research experience in the chemistry department is the principal thing that has prepared me for graduate school. It’s one thing to learn about amino acids and proteins in a lecture hall, but another to design mutations and think about the biophysical effect it has on proteins. The best way to learn anything is application, which especially applies in research. Through my Phi Eta Sigma Undergraduate Research Award, I had the opportunity to work this summer in the lab of Dr. Hong Li, professor of chemistry and biochemistry. Dr. Li has prepared me for a career in science by giving me the space to not only excel in her lab but also instill confidence in my techniques which are necessary for graduate school and beyond. My exposure to the hours of full-time research, as well as the disappointments, tediousness and relieving success of experimental design, are all vital preparation for graduate school.

How has your involvement in Alpha Chi Sigma furthered your professional career?

I rushed Alpha Chi Sigma, the national chemistry fraternity because I needed to find a community that allowed me to not only network but really bond with people who were going into my field. Last January I was elected alumni secretary. I organized research talks to inform members of research opportunities in our department as well as a senior panel and other career-based workshops. I became passionate about getting our members connected and prepared for the field they chose, so I decided to stay in my position for my senior year. Through my role, I have learned how to communicate effectively with professionals in my field and organize seminars and events.
