Eighteen Florida State University students will be studying abroad this summer and school year through the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program.

The Gilman Scholarship provides undergraduate students with high financial need the opportunity to study or intern in a foreign country. Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, the scholarship gives students the chance to become global citizens and active participants in their international community while gaining critical thinking and cultural awareness.

Chelsea James, a junior majoring in social science education with a minor in child development, will participate in the Broad Curriculum Program at the FSU London Study Centre through FSU International Programs. The Broad Curriculum Program includes FSU courses that satisfy requirements for graduation, CoreFSU and some majors or minors while living abroad.

After graduation next year, she plans to pursue a career in school leadership and hopes to expand student opportunities and transform the education landscape.

“I am excited to go to London because it will allow me to experience a diverse global culture firsthand while gaining new perspectives that will shape my growth as a future educator and leader,” James said.

Lana Abboud, a sophomore majoring in international affairs with a minor in economics, will participate in the Intensive French program in Paris through FSU International Programs. Students are placed in a language course based on their level of understanding and are taught entirely in French by native French-speaking faculty.

“This experience will strengthen my ability to engage across cultures and operate in international settings, while building the communication skills essential for diplomacy and global policy work,” Abboud said.

After graduation next fall, Abboud hopes to attend law school or pursue a career as a U.S. diplomat. She is interested in the intersection of international law and foreign policy and how they drive global corporations.

Niki Navarro Gutierrez, a junior majoring in digital media production and minoring in Italian and film, will attend the University of Foreigners of Perugia in Umbria, Italy, through FSU Global Exchanges.

“I am extremely interested in the appreciation that Italy, and Europe as a whole, has for film and the resources that are put into it,” Gutierrez said.

Gutierrez has a passion for creating documentaries or fiction films that tell a story about the culture they portray. She says she will benefit from traveling abroad and learning from diverse communities.

“Ultimately, I hope to return from Perugia not only with greater fluency in Italian, but also with the personal insight and professional skills to pursue documentary filmmaking on an international scale,” Gutierrez said.

Giselle Martinez, a junior majoring in biological science, will participate in FSU’s Biology in London program with FSU International Programs. Martinez will take two courses: Walking in Van Leeuwenhoek’s Shoes: Rediscovering Cell Biology, where students recreate classical experiments that shaped understanding of the cell, and Investigating Questions in Animal Behavior, which examines how development, genetics, and physiology shape behaviors like communication, aggression and sociality.

After graduation next year, Martinez plans to continue studying medicine as a women’s health researcher focusing on endometriosis and other women’s health concerns.

“I want to contribute to the under-researched and underrepresented areas of medicine in which many women find themselves struggling,” Martinez said.

Zorianna Starks, a junior majoring in psychology and minoring in social welfare, will study abroad in London and Amsterdam this summer through the Council on International Educational Exchange’s (CIEE) Comparative Public Health Systems program.

She plans to explore how cultural, social and economic factors influence the delivery of care and access to mental and public health.

“This experience will allow me to expand my perspective on mental health and public health systems while learning how different cultures address challenges in care and accessibility,” Starks said.

Starks also received funding through the Global Scholars Program, run by the Center for Undergraduate Research and Academic Engagement, and the Center for Academic Retention and Enhancement to support her study abroad experience.

“As someone pursuing a career in psychology and social work, it is important for me to understand diverse populations so I can better support and advocate for individuals from all backgrounds,” Starks said.

She plans to pursue a career as a child therapist, focusing on supporting underserved communities and addressing mental health disparities. Starks hopes this experience will strengthen her cultural awareness and provide insight that will help her make a meaningful impact in both clinical and community-based settings.

Silvia Rodriguez, a freshman majoring in economics, will participate in the Oxford University Consortium on Human Rights and New Technology in England with the FSU Honors Program.

During the consortium, she will present her findings about the impacts of artificial intelligence on the Florida criminal justice system. Her research focuses on predictive policing, sentencing algorithms and AI-driven immigration enforcement, and analyzing whether these technologies reinforce social biases in an international setting.

“Through the consortium, I will conduct interdisciplinary research on the ethical and legal implications of AI in the justice system and explore how policy can better protect civil rights in the digital age,” Rodriguez said.

After graduating from FSU, Rodriguez plans to attend law school.

Nashley Gabriel Cardenas, a junior majoring in accounting and minoring in criminology, will study abroad this summer in Strasbourg, France, through FSU Global Exchanges with a focus on business.

“This summer, I am looking forward to expanding my horizons and networking with students of different backgrounds,” Cardenas said. “Going abroad will give me the opportunity to understand how Europe approaches sustainability within business organizations with methods that I could apply to my business career.”

She is most excited to create new connections and to make her own path while being exposed to different cultures, branching out of her comfort zone in a new place.

“I never thought I would leave the U.S. during my time studying, and this means I have the power to create my own experiences and learn how to overcome impostor syndrome,” Cardenas said.

Madison Mager, a senior biological science major pursuing veterinary medicine, will intern this summer in Costa Rica through Loop Abroad, an educational veterinary service organization. She will work at the Toucan Rescue Ranch in San José, the country’s capital, to learn how another culture engages in animal care.

“I’m especially excited to learn from a completely different veterinary environment and gain new perspectives on wildlife care and conservation medicine,” Mager said. “I’m also looking forward to meeting new people, hearing their stories and experiencing another culture firsthand.”

After graduation, Mager plans to attend veterinary school and pursue exotic veterinary and conservation medicine.

Sophia Castro, a sophomore majoring in public health, will participate in the Broad Curriculum Program at the Valencia Study Center in Spain through FSU International Programs.

“Studying abroad in Valencia will challenge me to step outside of my comfort zone and engage with new cultures, perspectives, and ways of thinking,” Castro said. “This experience will help me develop the cultural awareness and adaptability needed to better serve diverse communities and become a more well-rounded and compassionate provider.”

After graduation, Castro hopes to earn a master’s degree in nursing with a long-term career plan of owning a medical spa.

Lizzie Alba, a freshman pursuing a dual degree in psychology and human development and family sciences, will intern abroad in Madrid, this summer with the American Institute for Foreign Study (AIFS). She will work with the nonprofit organization YMCA to support parents and children in the community. She also received funding through FSU’s Global Scholars Program.

“As someone who aspires to become a marriage and family therapist, these interactions with both parents and children will provide me with valuable hands-on experience and a deeper understanding of the field,” Alba said. “Through this experience, I hope to become even more culturally sensitive.”

Alba is excited about the opportunity to work with families in a new environment and learn about the cultural implications that come with a new domain.

Brianna Zapata, a junior majoring in environment and society and interdisciplinary social sciences, will participate in a language-intensive program in São Paulo, Brazil, this summer through the Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE).

“During the program, I will be studying topics related to urban sustainability, culture and global perspectives while gaining immersive international experience through coursework and community engagement,” Zapata said.

Zapata also earned a Critical Need Language Award, a supplemental scholarship offered through the Gilman Program. After graduation, she plans to focus on sustainability and conservation and how they impact underserved communities.

International Programs at Florida State University has named Ed Holroyd Pearce as the new director of the FSU London Study Centre.  

Pearce, who has more than 20 years of international leadership experience in higher and international education, begins the role Monday, April 20. 

“We are excited to welcome Ed to FSU London,” said Louisa Blenman, executive director of International Programs. “His extensive experience in international education and his commitment to expanding global opportunities for students make him an outstanding fit to lead the centre into its next chapter.” 

Pearce will lead FSU London’s efforts in strategic planning, program development and academic oversight. He will work closely with faculty and staff to enhance student experiences, expand partnerships and develop academic programs, providing high quality learning opportunities for students studying abroad at FSU London.  

“FSU has clear momentum in study abroad and international collaboration, and I’m excited to work with colleagues to build on that success — delivering an even stronger experience for students and faculty, and reinforcing the university’s global standing,” Pearce said.   

Christina Carroll, associate director of International Programs, served as interim director of FSU London since 2024 after former director Kathleen Paul’s retirement. According to Blenman, her work was critical for a successful director’s search and FSU London’s sustained excellence. Carroll will continue to provide guidance and support to FSU London.  

Pearce brings more than two decades of experience in international education to the role. He is the co-founder of several successful study abroad companies, including CRCC Asia and Virtual Internship Partners. From 2012 to 2018, he served as director of Transforma Travel Group, which offers educational tours worldwide. Pearce has served as chief product officer at Learning Unleashed since 2024, where he develops edtech products designed to enhance schools’ ability to facilitate meaningful exchange experiences.  

Throughout his career, Pearce has demonstrated an ongoing commitment to expanding access to international education. Founded in 2006, CRCC Asia pairs students with award-winning global internship programs in places like Tokyo, Seoul, Shanghai and Berlin. As the company’s co-founder and director, Pearce managed study abroad operations, facilitating placements for thousands of students and developing more than 60 partnerships with universities and government programs around the globe.  

Pearce also co-founded Virtual Internship Partners in 2018 to connect educators and employers worldwide to provide access to guaranteed internship opportunities. At both Virtual Internship Partners and Learning Unleashed, Pearce expanded global internship opportunities and led the development of educational technology platforms. 

Across these roles, he has helped lead global programs serving more than 20,000 students. 

“Having worked across global education, partnerships and program development, I’ve seen what it takes to make international experiences truly effective,” Pearce said. “I’m looking forward to applying those insights at FSU London — enhancing academic quality, strengthening partnerships and ensuring students get the most out of their time abroad.” 

Pearce holds an MBA with distinction from Bayes Business School at City, University of London and an MSc in international management (merit) from SOAS, University of London. He also earned an MA in East Asian studies from the University of Cambridge.

A delegation from Florida State University’s Tallahassee campus recently visited the university’s regional branch campus in the Republic of Panama to strengthen collaborations, expand student opportunities and deepen academic partnerships.

FSU Panama offers four undergraduate degree programs, three of which are housed in the College of Social Sciences and Public Policy, making the college a central partner in the campus’s academic mission.

The FSU delegation included three representatives from the College of Social Sciences and Public Policy: Amanda Driscoll., the Dr. J. Elizabeth Garraway Professor and director of Undergraduate Studies for the Department of Political Science; Na’Ama Nagar, program director and teaching professor for the International Affairs program; and Ladanya Ramirez Surmeier, director of Undergraduate Studies and assistant teaching professor in the Public Health program and director of the Pepper Certified Peer Health Educator Scholarship.

Vilma Fuentes, a visiting associate in research at the Learning Systems Institute (LSI) and director of FSU’s Ukraine Task Force, was also part of the delegation.

“There is a clear opportunity for our Panama campus to serve as a hub for experiential learning and expanded academic engagement,” Nagar said. “With intentional partnerships and renewed focus, we can position the campus not just as an extension of the university, but as a strategic gateway for global impact.”

FSU has operated a campus in the Republic of Panama since 1957, when it was contracted by the U.S. government to establish an education center in the former Panama Canal Zone. The campus falls under the purview of FSU’s International Programs, which provides quality international learning environments and opportunities for students.

Throughout the visit, the group met with key stakeholders, students, alumni and academic partners to explore ways to promote collaboration between FSU Panama and the Tallahassee campus, particularly through internships, study abroad programs and alumni engagement. The visit also included meetings with Panama’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the U.S. Embassy and the United Nations, as well as a tour of the City of Knowledge facilities where FSU Panama is located. These organizations are all located near the FSU Panama campus, offering students access to hands‑on professional experience while completing their coursework.

As part of their engagement on campus, the delegation delivered a presentation to about 30 students, faculty and staff, highlighting programs within the College of Social Sciences and Public Policy and opportunities for collaboration between campuses.

Beyond the campus presentation, the delegation also participated in a meeting with Ambassador Kevin Cabrera, the U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of Panama, which focused on Embassy priorities and explored opportunities to connect FSU Panama with Embassy initiatives and internship pathways.

“We see impressive opportunities for enhanced scholarly exchange,” Driscoll said. “FSU Panama provides an ideal setting for international scholarly conferences and colloquia. As a multinational and multilingual crossroads of the Americas, the Republic of Panama presents minimal logistical or linguistic barriers for international participants and offers easier access for scholars traveling from Central and South America than most locations in the continental United States.”

The delegation also toured Panama City and the Panama Canal, providing context for the country’s strategic and economic significance. “FSU Panama has the potential to be a key partner for the Public Health Program,” Ramirez said. “After meeting with representatives from the UN-World Food Program and the UN-Food and Agriculture Organization, our students will be able to learn how to meet international public health needs while studying at FSU Panama. In addition, I look forward to identifying opportunities for students to work with the CDC Caribbean and Central American Regional Office.”

Florida State University welcomed Germany’s ambassador to the U.S. for a campus visit last week, highlighting the university’s growing role in global research, education and international partnership. 

German Ambassador to the U.S. Jens Hanefeld met with FSU administrators and engaged with students, faculty and staff Friday, Jan. 23. Hanefeld was in Tallahassee to sign a Joint Declaration of Intent between the State of Florida and the Federal Republic of Germany, promoting strategic investment, industrial ties and economic growth. 

“Florida and Germany are not just trading, we’re investing in each other’s futures, building jobs and cutting-edge technologies together,” said Hanefeld. “Florida State University stands out as a powerhouse of cutting-edge research, and this excellence has long resonated across the Atlantic.” 

Following his talk, which took place in The Globe Auditorium, Hanefeld engaged in a discussion with students, answering questions ranging from the war in Ukraine and Russian oil dependency to career paths in foreign service. Brad T. Gomez, associate professor and chair of the Department of Political Science in the College of Social Sciences and Public Policy, introduced Ambassador Hanefeld and moderated the question and answer portion. 

Hanefeld joined the German Federal Foreign Office in 1991 and has built a distinguished diplomatic career over more than three decades. Early in his service, he held posts at the Federal Foreign Office in Bonn and Berlin and at the German Embassy in Sofia, Bulgaria. From 2001 to 2005 he served as private secretary to the Secretary of State, followed by his role as head of the Secretary of State’s office from 2005 to 2009.  

From 2009 to 2014, Hanefeld served as Minister and Deputy Chief of the Mission at the German Embassy in Washington, D.C. From 2014 to 2024 he joined the Volkswagen Group as the senior vice president for International, European, and Trade Policy, bringing his diplomatic experience to bear on global economic and trade issues. Prior to his current appointment, Hanefeld served as the German Ambassador to Ethiopia and Permanent Observer to the African Union in 2024.  

Hanefeld was appointed as Germany’s ambassador to the U.S. in August 2025. In this role, Hanefeld represents German interests and works to strengthen diplomatic relations between Germany and the U.S.  

During his presentation, Hanefeld reinforced the importance of transatlantic cooperation and the benefits of partnership between Florida and Germany. He explained that there is clear potential to grow Florida’s exports in advanced manufacturing along withtechnology logistics and services.  

“We need these collaborations,” he said. “The great challenges of our time—securing digital infrastructures, resilient supply chains for semiconductors, and breakthroughs in healthcare—cannot be solved by any single country alone.” 

Germany is currently the third-largest foreign investor in Florida, with around 200 German companies employing approximately 40,000 people across the state. The cooperation in innovation and education between Florida and Germany is beneficial to all parties, strengthening economic ties, fostering research collaboration, and creating opportunities for students and businesses alike.  

While on FSU’s main campus, Hanefeld also met with administrators from across the university to discuss its existing connections with Germany and explore ways to expand those partnerships and build new ones.  

“Institutional ties are complemented by vibrant academic exchanges with German universities,” said Hanefeld. “Together these collaborations highlight not only past successes but also the immense potential for future cooperation.”

• FSU maintains exchange agreements with four German universities through FSU’s Global Exchange Programs: Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich, University of Oldenburg, University of Wuppertal and the WHU – Otto Beisheim School of Management in Vallendar.  

• This semester there is one German exchange student on FSU’s main campus, and three FSU students are participating in exchanges in Germany. 

• FSU students can study abroad in Dresden through International Programs’ Experiencing Germany program, a German-language intensive summer program that acquaints participants with the language and culture of contemporary Germany. 

• Five German student-athletes currently compete on Florida State Seminoles’ athletic teams, including swimming, tennis and volleyball.

Raven Watkins, a dual anthropology and studio art major at Florida State University, is studying the intersection of art, academics and social impact.

Watkins immersed herself in Spanish culture at the FSU campus in Valencia, Spain, for the summer of 2024 under the Brooks Rogers scholarship. She attended the biological anthropology field school in Chelva, a region out of Valencia, where she learned the techniques of bioarchaeology by studying and cataloging a victim of the Spanish Civil War.

After her time abroad, Watkins researched under the Tyler Fellowship within the IDEA Grant program, and she is now pursuing the Global Citizenship Certification.

Inspired by her studies, Watkins’ current research focuses on telling stories of the Spanish Civil War through stop-motion animation. She promotes the importance of artists in research because they have the capability to build community and represent emotion.

Through these efforts, Watkins uniquely applies her artistic abilities in telling stories that connect people and uplift vulnerable communities.

Why did you choose to attend Florida State University?

I chose FSU over all other universities because I wanted a holistic perspective of university life with many strengths outside of the arts. For me, at the top of my list of importance was to have a broad and strong list of disciplines that create a well-rounded student body and staff. I was unsure of the path I wanted to take out of high school, so a big university with a multitude of options was ideal for me to be able to explore every avenue, and I continue to reap those benefits. 

What academic achievements have you accomplished at FSU?

My most significant academic accomplishments thus far while at FSU include my summer with FSU International Programs studying abroad in Valencia, participating at the biological anthropology field school in Chelva, Spain.  

I also stayed in The Conventual Franciscans, where St. Francis de Assisi famously founded the order of the Franciscans in the 14th century. I learned about the history of the region of Valencia, dating all the way back to its creation. This time is what inspired me on my first visit to Valencia to continue my research here, as Spain is often disregarded in the global discussion about the history of fascism. 

The Spanish song “Tatuaje,” by Concha Piquer, inspired my deep dive in this area. It highlights the cultural aspect of mourning loss while staying strong that the Spaniards exhibited during this time of history. In response to this work, I will continue my artistic research as a stop-motion animation. I’m proud to have received an IDEA Grant award to fund this work, and I will be defending the animation through Honors in the Major. 

How do you serve the FSU community?

My most significant contribution beyond the classroom at FSU has been my time working for Assistant Professor Katie Kehoe in the College of Fine Arts as an art researcher in 2024 for the engaged art initiative in Steinhatchee, Florida. I planted fruit trees and bushes for a community dedication event that honors members of the community who exemplified resilience in the wake of Hurricane Helene. It was an experience I am honored to have been a part of as someone who was greatly impacted by Hurricane Michael in my hometown of Panama City, Florida.

The study of economics transcends language and geographic barriers across the world, as individuals rely on its teachings to make better choices and live a more satisfying life. 

At Florida State University, the Gus A. Stavros Center for the Advancement of Free Enterprise and Economic Education is leading multiple efforts to provide quality economics education on campus and around the world. 

The Stavros Center was founded in 1988 through a generous endowment from Gus Stavros and his wife, Frances. The son of Greek immigrants, Stavros created the center with the mission to further free enterprise and extend economics education in schools and the broader community. 

Joseph Calhoun, a teaching professor and director of the Stavros Center, is fulfilling that mission statement in several different ways. 

“There is no physical limit to how that mission is achieved,” Calhoun said. “Regardless of where the teacher is, if they have anything to do with economics, personal finance or entrepreneurship, it falls within our mission to reach them. From Eastern Europe or just down the road here at a high school, the center can help them. International outreach is something that is very consistent with Gus Stavros’ mission for the center and something he would have loved.” 

With a career spanning more than 21 years, Calhoun has taught many upper-division economics and personal finance courses at FSU. He also created the Unconquered by Debt Program, which helps enhance financial literacy among students through online resources and peer mentor workshops. 

Calhoun has experience teaching abroad at all three of FSU’s European study centers through International Programs — twice at FSU Florence and FSU Valencia and once at FSU London. 

“You try to show students, locally, how what we talk about in class is relevant to not just people in the United States, but people in those three locations,” Calhoun said. “It’s not the typical micro or macroeconomics course as we apply it in the context of where the students are studying abroad.” 

According to Calhoun, the Stavros Center’s international work all started through the book “Common Sense Economics: What Everyone Should Know About Wealth and Prosperity.”

Originally written in 1993 by James D. Gwartney, one of America’s most respected economists and professor who taught economics at FSU for 53 years and served as director of the Stavros Center from 2004-2015, “Common Sense” is a “primer” to economics — a high-level and non-technical book accessible to everyone regardless of their knowledge on the subject. Calhoun co-authored the book’s third and fourth editions. 

“If you’re only going to read one book about economics and personal finance, ‘Common Sense’ is the book,” he said.  

In 2019, an anonymous benefactor provided an endowment to the Economics Fundamentals Initiative (EFI), a non-profit organization dedicated to inspiring interest in the learning and teaching of economics, to have “Common Sense” translated into 12 different languages and distributed at no cost to educators. EFI recruited Calhoun to assist in this effort which focused predominately on languages from post-communist countries including Czech, Albanian and Ukrainian.  

To guarantee that translations were done properly, Calhoun and the EFI worked with subject-matter experts in each country. Certain examples were adapted according to each country’s specific economic and cultural situations. 

“When we talk about checking accounts and mutual funds in the text, that might not be relevant to some of the countries the book is being translated into,” Calhoun said. “Examples with the Federal Reserve Bank are not something that people in other countries have. Some languages like Armenian and Georgian didn’t even have words for some English economic terms—they had to come up with something new.” 

Due to this expanded global reach, “Common Sense” is now a resource used in preparation for the Economics Olympiad (EO), an annual competition for high school students around the world in the areas of economics and finance. The EO operates under the auspices of the International Olympic Academy, the main educational and cultural institution for the International Olympic Committee, the guardian of the Olympic games.  

The EO is the world’s largest and fastest-growing global competition in economics for high school students. There are currently 68 countries participating in the EO, including the U.S., with over 80,000 students engaging in the competition. 

The competition consists of four rounds, with the first round taking place at each individual school. Qualifying students advance to the regional round. Following that, qualifying students compete in a national round. Subsequently, the top five students from each nation are selected to represent their country in the International Final Round, the fourth and final stage of the competition.  

In this final stage, participants gather at the EO’s host nation for a two-day competition. There, students participate in three rounds of challenging tests including multiple choice, short answer response, case studies, presentations and collaborative projects guided by leading economists, entrepreneurs and academics. 

In 2024, the International Final Round of the Economics Olympiad took place in Ancient Olympia, Greece, with 87 students representing 18 countries. Calhoun was invited to serve as a judge for the competition in 2024 and will reprise that role again at this year’s event.

Five students representing the U.S. will participate in the International Final Round for the very first time this summer.

Calhoun’s role in the competition aligns with FSU’s focus on encouraging faculty across campus to participate in events where they can showcase their expertise and why it’s crucial, particularly on a global scale.  

“I was greatly encouraged to see high school students from around the world who are interested and passionate about economics,” Calhoun said. “It was incredibly rewarding to encourage them and cheer for their success. I was very proud to wear my FSU shirt and to demonstrate how my university supports education beyond Tallahassee.”

Planning a trip abroad or research project for the first time can be an intimidating task, especially as an undergraduate student with little to no experience. At Florida State University, the Global Scholars Program provides students with guidance and support as they plan and pursue their own student-designed learning experiences.

To highlight these experiences and their outcomes, the Global Scholars Program hosted its annual Global Scholars Showcase Dec. 6 at the Honors, Scholars, and Fellows (HSF) House. The event featured projects ranging from the role of health care systems in Spain to exploring the solidarity of immigration in Morocco and war related tourism in Eastern Europe.

Part of the Center for Undergraduate Research and Academic Engagement (CRE) at FSU, the Global Scholars Program is an experiential education program that helps train students to conduct independent, community-based learning opportunities. It offers a unique opportunity for undergraduate students to engage with critical questions about social impact, social justice, and social change through a combination of academic, classroom-based learning as well as independent research, internship, and/or service-learning experiences.

The program’s strong ‘global’ focus provides guidance and support to help students design their own independent, community-based, learning opportunities over the summer, which may include an online internship with a social impact organization (in the U.S. or abroad), an in-person internship with a social impact organization (in the U.S. or abroad), or a self-directed research project focusing on a social issue in a local context.

The program includes three phases. During the spring semester, students enroll in a theory course that teaches them about the ethics of community-based projects and how to use qualitative research to understand community impacts. The course also helps students determine their individualized levels of comfort and how to develop an experience and get it approved by FSU.

The next phase of the program is the student experience. The third phase of the program includes a reflection course during the fall semester that helps students think back on their experiences and prepare their presentations for the annual Global Scholars Showcase.

With the possibility of traveling around the globe, one of the goals of the program is to teach students to balance risk with the independent experiences they may pursue.

“The program’s design helps students learn how to assess personal risk in a given situation and plan for their future — assessing their own level of comfort for interaction,” said CRE Associate Director Warren Oliver, who runs the Global Scholars Program.

This year, the Global Scholars Program welcomed a cohort of 27 students who conducted experiences in 14 countries. Whether examining health through consumerism in Japan, learning about human rights in Kosovo, or interning with a non-governmental organization in Morocco, the program’s latest cohort continued to expand FSU’s reach around the globe.

Florida State University is helping to train the next generation of professional baseball players from Central America and the Caribbean through a partnership with the Mariano Rivera Baseball Stadium and High-Performance Training Center in the Republic of Panama.

FSU Panama plans to offer English as a Second Language (ESL) classes to young athletes participating in the programs of the Center. The partnership will also explore how the FSU College of Education, Health and Human Sciences will offer support for the Center’s management, resulting in research, internship and job opportunities for FSU students.

“This partnership with the Mariano Rivera Center will open a window of opportunities for students and faculty from Tallahassee and Panama, allowing them to participate as key players in projects related to the advancement of the young Panamanians who aspire to become professional baseball players,” said Carlos Langoni, rector of FSU Panama.

The partnership was finalized with the signing of a memorandum of understanding during the inauguration ceremony of the facilities on June 21, 2024. A delegation from FSU Panama attended the ceremony, which included remarks from Mariano Rivera and Laurentino Cortizo, who was serving as the 38th President of Panama at the time.

Seventeen Florida State University students will build foreign language skills and study abroad this summer after earning scholarships through the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program.

The Gilman Scholarship is awarded by the U.S. Department of State and gives students the opportunity to study or intern in foreign countries with the aim of building proficiency in languages and preparing individuals for a globalized world.

“We are thrilled for the 17 FSU students nominated for Gilman Scholarships this year and are excited to see their dreams of studying abroad come to life,” said Jesse Wieland, associate director of the Office of National Fellowships. “We have students representing our Tallahassee and Panama City campuses engaging in different programs that fit their academic and personal interests, which highlights the flexibility of this award and how our students put in the effort to find opportunities crucial to their own growth and development.”

The Gilman Scholarship program was founded in 2001 and is named after the late Benjamin Gilman, who served for 30 years in the U.S. House of Representatives and chaired its House Foreign Relations Committee. The scholarship enables American students to gain proficiency in languages, skills that are critically important to their academic and career development. More than 28,000 students have taken part in the program since its inception.

The scholarship enables students of limited financial means to study or intern abroad, providing them with skills critical to national security and economic prosperity. To be eligible for the Gilman Program, applicants must be receiving a Federal Pell Grant during the time of application or provide proof that they will be receiving a Pell Grant during the term of their study abroad program or internship. The Institute of International Education has administered the program since its inception.

Two students will use the Gilman Scholarship to study abroad in Costa Rica this summer. Kate Deviney, a political science major minoring in Spanish, will study the Spanish language and conversation through an external provider in San Joaquin de Flores, Heredia Province in Costa Rica. She looks forward to immersing herself in the Spanish language and developing a deeper understanding of the different backgrounds and perspectives in the region.

“As a pre-law student from South Florida, I’ve observed the increasing significance of Spanish as a predominant language in the region,” Deviney said. “I aspire to bridge the communication gap and provide legal assistance to Spanish-speaking communities. This experience will not only enhance my professional capabilities but also enable me to effectively connect with and advocate for clients from varied backgrounds in my future legal career.”

Chelsea Brown will also study abroad in the Heredia Province in Costa Rica this summer. She’s using her Gilman Scholarship to participate in the Spanish Immersion Experience Program administered through International Programs. The program offers students a unique opportunity for complete immersion in the Spanish language and Costa Rican culture.

Several recipients are using the Gilman Scholarship to study abroad in London this summer. Alexis Rister, a criminology major, and Sabrina Jacques, a nursing major, will participate in the Broad Curriculum Program at the FSU London Study Centre through International Programs.

“I wanted an experience so similar yet so different from the U.S.,” Jacques said. “I hope to broaden my horizons when it comes to European history.”

Rister said she looks forward to exploring and building memories abroad.

“The Gilman Scholarship has given me an experience I will forever cherish as a first-generational student,” Rister said.

Michael Ackeret, a psychology major, will study abroad at FSU London this summer through the Psychology Program administered by International Programs. Students in this program study the principles of psychology across many domains and explore London to compare how applications of psychology differ across cultures.

“As a first-generation student and recovered addict, winning the Gilman Scholarship isn’t just a financial relief, it is the realization of my wildest dreams come true,” Ackeret said. “Transformation is what I’m all about, and this scholarship opens doors for me to grow personally and academically.”

Theatre major Jason Alvarez will study abroad in London during the Fall 2024 semester through the Theatre Academy London Program. Located in the heart of the West End, Theatre Academy London provides an immersive experience through theater training to develop and add depth to students’ work.

“With studying abroad and coming from a low-income family, I wanted to see what resources I could use to help me get to where I want to be,” Alvarez said. “Gilman challenged me to envision how my goals could shape me into the artist I want to become upon returning to Tallahassee.”

Rose Clermont, a student double-majoring in public health and international affairs, participated in the International Affairs in London Program over spring break through International Programs. The weeklong program is a component of the Introduction to International Affairs (INS 3003) course for students enrolled in the International Programs section. The trip includes a visit to Parliament, a walking tour in central London and visits to various sites and museums like the Tower of London and the British Museum.

“As a first-generation college student and American, my desire to study abroad was initially hindered by financial constraints,” Clermont said. “The Gilman Program not only provided the financial means for me to pursue this opportunity but also welcomed me into a network of individuals who utilized their international experiences in their professional careers, offering numerous professional opportunities. During my time abroad, I was able to further integrate the principles of international affairs and public health, gaining a deeper understanding of global NGOs such as A21, and broadening my comprehension of frameworks addressing global issues.”

Some students are using their Gilman Scholarship to study abroad in Florence, Italy. Tessa Mahurin, a student double-majoring in art history and business management, and Makenzie Heyliger, a public health major, will participate in the Broad Curriculum Program at the FSU Florence Study Center through International Programs. This experience will allow them to earn credits in both general requirements and elective courses in a variety of disciplines while living in the birthplace of the Renaissance.

“I applied for the Gilman Scholarship to fulfill my dream of studying in Florence, Italy to engage in Italian art and language,” Mahurin said. “As an art history and business management major with minors in Italian and museum studies, I am deeply fascinated with Italy’s contributions to the art and business world.”

“As a public health major, I learn of many cultures, ethnicities, backgrounds and locations worldwide and how health and health disparities differ across the country and the globe,” Heyliger said. “The ability to experience these various differences on a greater scale firsthand will be an opportunity to expand my knowledge within my major and apply what I have learned in class to the real world.”

Kaylan Williams, a public relations major, will participate in the Communication and Media in Florence Program at FSU Florence this summer through International Programs. The program focuses on providing students with unique hands-on communication and media experience through direct interactions with Italian clients. Students compose “ItaliaNoles,” the campus magazine at FSU Florence.

“I applied to the Gilman Scholarship to help make studying abroad more accessible for me,” Williams said. “I hope to fully immerse myself in Italy’s culture and learn more about my major through FSU’s Communication and Media program.”

Tafari D’Aguilar, a mechanical engineering major, will participate in a study abroad experience in Rome this summer through an external provider.

“Thanks to the amazing guidance from the ONF faculty and Presidential Scholars program staff I was able to learn and plan for this amazing fellowship,” D’Aguilar said. “Being so fortunate to receive this opportunity, I hope to gain a holistic view of the world as I learn more about the culture, history and people of Rome, while simultaneously continuing the pursuit of higher education.”

Other students will use their Gilman to take them to Valencia, Spain, this summer. Adrian Vivas-Nambo, a student double-majoring in biological science and Spanish, will participate in an internship at a physical therapy clinic through International Studies Abroad.

“I aim to enhance my clinical experience while respecting Spain’s privacy regulations, and hope to influence the health care system positively, assisting me in deciding whether to pursue a career as a medical doctor or a physician assistant,” he said.

Samantha Prophete, a human development and family sciences major, will participate in the Taking Family Science Abroad Program at the FSU Valencia Study Center this summer through International Programs. Students in this program gain an understanding of Spanish culture and family life through visits to museums, schools, daycares, neighborhoods and local communities.

“I applied to the Gilman Scholarship program because of its generous financial support for studying abroad, which would alleviate the financial burden on my family,” Prophete said. “Additionally, I saw it as an opportunity to challenge myself in a competitive arena. Studying in Valencia, Spain this summer, I aim to immerse myself in Spanish culture, language and way of life, returning with a deeper understanding and appreciation of the country.”

Natalia Lopez and Gabriela Gonzalez, both psychology majors, will study abroad at FSU Valencia this summer as participants in the Broad Curriculum Program through International Programs. Through the broad curriculum program, students can pursue general requirements and elective courses in a variety of disciplines while experiencing Valencia and its surrounding areas.

“I chose to apply for this fellowship because several professors and mentors encouraged me to study abroad and take advantage of all of the resources offered in the program,” Lopez said. “I hope that during this abroad experience I will develop a better understanding of my own personal and professional values, as well as strengthen them to make my career path clearer.”

“Facing financial struggles is precisely why I applied for the Gilman scholarship,” Gonzalez said. “I saw it as a crucial opportunity to study abroad, enrich my Spanish proficiency and deepen my understanding. These skills are vital for my future as a health care provider, enabling me to connect with various patients on a deeper level.”

Freddy Mendoza, a human development and family sciences major, will study abroad at FSU Valencia during the Fall 2024 semester as a participant in the Broad Curriculum Program through International Programs.

“Studying abroad is an opportunity I might not have again,” Mendoza said. “I wanted to take the opportunities I have at FSU to apply for scholarships and study abroad without worrying about the financials.”

One student, India Lambert, will participate in a direct enroll program at Waseda University in Tokyo this summer. One of FSU’s more than 45 international partner universities, Waseda University offers a unique summer program for international students to take courses on various topics and learn more about Tokyo and Japanese culture.

These Spring 2024 Florida State University graduates have worked hard to reach this moment, and all have unique stories about their time at FSU. From research to community involvement, their experiences have shaped who they are and prepared them for what’s next.

Conor Andrich

Sarasota native Conor Andrich completed his Master of Arts in Museum and Cultural Heritage Studies (MCHS) in the Department of Art History. During his two years at FSU, Andrich pursued his interests in vernacular art — a genre of visual art made by self-taught artists — and community-centric heritage.  

“I decided to attend FSU because the MCHS program presented what I saw to be the perfect balance between the conceptual/theoretical elements of art history and the practical elements of museum work,” he said. “I have really broadened my horizons both intellectually and professionally through this program.” 

While attending classes at FSU, Andrich worked with the Carrabelle History Museum, a small museum with a local focus on the panhandle town of Carrabelle, helping them catalog their collection and create oral histories with community members. He also interned at Everglades National Park in the South Florida Collections Management Center.

“I am proud of the work I have done with the Carrabelle History Museum, which tells the story of Carrabelle through objects that are sourced from the community,” Andrich said. “The Carrabelle History Museum is a labor of love and the truest reflection of its community, and I believe that is what museum work, at its heart, should be about.” 

After graduation, Andrich will work at the Seminole Tribe of Florida’s Ah-Tah-Thi-Ki Museum in Hollywood, Florida, where he will assist in the cataloging, conservation and curation of a 200,000-object collection of Florida Indigenous art, artifacts and material culture. 

“I am eager to contribute to the preservation of Indigenous history and knowledge, as well as to a greater public understanding of the fact that Indigenous cultures remain vital today, especially in Florida,” he said. 

Narjes Dridi

International student Narjes Dridi earned her Ph.D. in chemistry and biochemistry from the College of Arts and Sciences this semester. Born and raised in Tunisia, the northernmost country in Africa, Dridi wanted to pursue a doctorate in the U.S. because of its reputation in scientific research.  

She learned about Florida State from her chemistry professor at the Faculty of Sciences of Tunis in Tunisia, where she earned her master’s degree. His daughter had started her doctoral studies in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at FSU and touted the program’s interdisciplinary nature.  

After a two-year application process and five years of research, Dridi made the dream of completing her Ph.D. a reality.

“I met so many people, including my best friend who’s a visiting scholar, got two pet cats, traveled to different states, tried new cuisines and learned about different cultures and, most of all, I feel proud of myself for finally getting my Ph.D.,” she said. 

Dridi’s research focuses on the clinical application of nanomaterials. Her primary project makes polymer coatings and inorganic materials biocompatible for clinical applications like drug delivery and cancer detection.  

“Using my research to detect cancer enzymes is my favorite application so far,” Dridi said. “If any cancer enzyme is detected in the sampled blood, the solution’s color would change, indicating its presence, which could allow the user to get treated in the earlier stages of the disease. It’s almost like an at-home pregnancy test: easy to read and saves time, energy and money.” 

Nanomaterials are toxic and not yet safe for medicinal use, but Dridi’s goal is to become an entrepreneur and use her research to develop functional nanotechnology materials to benefit society and the environment.  

Following graduation, Dridi will remain in the U.S. to continue learning about the business and technology industry as the next step in her journey of making “nanotechnology truly useful for everyone.”

Julie Kuper and Tessa Spaulding

Julie Kuper, a first-generation college student from Naples, Florida, graduated with a doctorate in criminology. What could make it more meaningful? Her sister, Tessa Spaulding, is graduating, too, with a bachelor’s in editing, writing and media. 

“This is a really special moment for us,” Kuper said. “I am beyond excited to just enjoy and drink that in. Our family gets to gather here, all in one place, just to celebrate and dream up what the future might hold.”

Over 150 international educators from 54 institutions across the state flocked to Florida State University on Feb. 16 to participate in the 25th Annual Florida Association of International Educators (FAIE) State Conference.

FAIE promotes international education and serves as a resource to educators, organizations and students in Florida through professional development and connection-building. Conference topics ranged from ChatGPT to cultural exchanges and study abroad.

As this year’s conference host, FSU reaffirmed its commitment to providing world-class international partnerships and educational programs for students.

During his opening remarks, President Richard McCullough recounted a transformative sabbatical in Copenhagen where he met one of his best friends and learned about the importance of cultural exchanges.

“The power of what students and postdocs and visitors learn by coming to the United States and what we learn by going to other countries is absolutely invaluable and it’s important in so many incredible ways,” he said. “As you know well, all that you do is incredibly important for educating the next generation of students so that they can learn about these cultural exchanges interacting with other countries, other people, and what you do is so vital to the world. It not only increases understanding and the power of international education, but it changes lives, and that’s the work that you do.”

The FAIE Board of Directors honored the FSU Center for Global Engagement (CGE) and its director, Cindy Green, for supporting and hosting the 25th annual conference.

The CGE provides orientation, immigration advising, and ongoing support to over 2,400 international students and more than 250 international scholars and faculty at FSU. It also offers a variety of educational, social, and cultural programs throughout the year, like the weekly International Coffee Hour or the annual International Bazaar.

“Having FSU serve as the host for the 25th FAIE annual conference provided a great opportunity for other international educators from across the state to not only experience a great conference but also to learn more about FSU’s international initiatives,” Green said.

The CGE also oversees FSU’s Global Exchange programs, which give students the opportunity to study at partner institutions in places like Thailand, Australia and Germany. FSU students can also study abroad through International Programs at one of their European study centers in Florence, London and Valencia, or through one of International Programs’ discipline-targeted trips in places like Kosovo, Croatia and Switzerland. In addition, FSU has a degree-granting branch campus in the Republic of Panama with more than 400 students currently enrolled.

Betty Jensen, an international student advisor with the Center for Global Engagement at FSU, served as the 2024 FAIE Conference coordinator. Jensen arrived in Tallahassee as an international student from Peru in 1975 and earned both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from FSU. She credited FSU and the CGE for their assistance in planning the conference.

Florida State University Provost and Executive Vice President Jim Clark encouraged the newest class of graduates from FSU’s Republic of Panama campus to be lifelong learners and embody success during a commencement ceremony Tuesday, Dec. 5, at the City of Knowledge Convention Center in Panama City, Panama.

Clark, who served as dean of the FSU College of Social Work from 2015-2021 prior to becoming provost, delivered the keynote speech to the FSU-Panama Class of 2023. He noted the parallels between students’ goals and ambitions and those of FSU.

“We are a university on the rise with some audacious goals, and you – our graduates – are on a similar trajectory for success in the next phase of your lives,” Clark said.

FSU-Panama awarded nine degrees during the ceremony, which was slightly smaller than the tri-annual pomp and circumstance that takes place on FSU’s main campus (3,047 students are graduating this fall).

FSU-Panama Rector Carlos Langoni presided over the ceremony, accompanied by vice rectors, members of the FSU Panama Board of Directors, and faculty members. Marcela Espinoza, valedictorian of the FSU-Panama Class of 2023, also shared remarks with graduates and guests.

Originally from Nicaragua, Espinoza commended the faculty and staff at FSU-Panama for their support along her academic journey, referring to them as the “heart of the university.”

“You have planted the seed of knowledge in each of us, and we can assure you with certainty that the seed has germinated and will continue to grow,” Espinoza said. “Armed with an excellent education and wealth of experiences, we are ready to pursue our dreams and professional aspirations.”
