Florida State University’s First Lady Jai Vartikar joined hundreds of students, alumni and campus leaders Wednesday, April 22 for the inaugural Legacy Tea, an event that honored the university’s roots as a women’s college and recognized the impact of female leaders.

Hosted by the Panhellenic Association in the Student Union Ballrooms, the event was part of the university’s yearlong 175th anniversary celebration.

The program featured remarks from student, faculty and university leaders, including Vice President for Student Affairs Amy Hecht, history Professor and Department Chair Jennifer Koslow, Panhellenic President Emma Clark and this year’s featured speaker FSU First Lady Jai Vartikar.

Vartikar said the event reflects a central truth about Florida State’s history: “When we talk about the legacy of Florida State University, we are talking about the legacy of women.”

The week introduced “The Power of One,” a campaign created to empower students to create positive change. Centered around hazing prevention and medical amnesty, “The Power of One” brings awareness to the power every student holds to be able to do the right thing and make the call for help.

“Hazing prevention continues to be a priority for Florida State in keeping students safe during their years on campus,” said Amy Hecht, vice president for the Division of Student Affairs (DSA). “I could not be prouder of the campus-wide support for this incredible initiative.”

“The Power of One” initiative was inspired by the mother of Andrew Coffey, an FSU student who died in 2017 during a hazing incident.

“If one of the kids from the party that night — there were 90 kids there — if just one of them would have picked up the phone when they saw that Andrew needed some help, he’d still be here,” Sandy Coffey said.

As part of the initiative, the FSU Hazing Prevention Team developed an interactive experience, held over two nights, that challenges participants’ decision making, ethical reasoning and community impact. More than 700 participants made real-time choices through a series of scenarios to comprehend the downstream effects and consequences of their decisions.

Throughout the week, students received hazing prevention information. During Market Wednesday, many on-campus departments and student organizations shared tabling educational resources.

The final event of the week was a keynote presentation by Dr. Louis Profeta, an emergency room physician at St. Vincent Hospital of Minnesota, who spoke to more than 600 students on the impact that drug and alcohol abuse can have. He emphasized the importance of how one person can have an impact on increasing community well-being.

“Florida State University continues to prioritize hazing prevention on our campus, and this week was a testament to that,” said Freddy Juarez, director of Fraternity and Sorority Life and director of Strategic Initiatives. “Between student engagement at the events and staff support in sharing resources with our students, it is evident that FSU continues to be committed to maintaining a safe campus for our students.”

The FSU Hazing Prevention Team is comprised of representatives from Fraternity and Sorority Life, Student Conduct & Community Standards, Investigations & Assessment, University Health Services, Center for Health Advocacy and Wellness, Student Organizations and Involvement, Campus Recreation and The Center for Leadership & Service.

“I am so proud of our fraternity and sorority life community at FSU for being so highly decorated this past year,” said Amy Hecht, vice president for Student Affairs. “Our FSL organizations continue to lead the way in the national conversation around thriving Greek organizations.”

FSU is home to more than 50 fraternity and sorority chapters across five governing councils: Interfraternity Council, Multicultural Greek Council, National Pan-Hellenic Council, Panhellenic Association and United Greek Council. In the recently released 2026 rankings, Niche named Florida State University No. 1 Best Greek Life College in America and No. 7 College with the Best Student Life in America.

The Interfraternity Council, Multicultural Greek Council, National Pan-Hellenic Council and Panhellenic Association at FSU were honored at the regional level, winning a combined 10 awards by the Southeastern Greek Leadership Association. FSU’s Panhellenic Association also won the highest honors regionally and nationally for a collegiate panhellenic association.

“It is not surprising to see our community celebrated in this way as their commitment to excellence is evident on our campus every day,” said Freddy Juarez, director of FSL. “Each organization and student continues to commit to fostering collective excellence and thriving as one FSL community.”

Eight organizations won the highest award given by their national organizations for a collegiate chapter: Alpha Delta Pi, Chi Omega, Delta Delta Delta, Kappa Sigma, Phi Iota Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated., Pi Kappa Alpha, Sigma Delta Tau and Zeta Tau Alpha. These awards celebrate the outstanding chapter management, member development, and educational experiences provided by each chapter.

Additionally, the Association of Fraternity/Sorority Advisors honored FSU’s new program, 5 Senses of Hazing, with a 2025 Elevation in Practice – Innovation Award. Developed by FSU FSL and its student-led peer education team, 5 Senses of Hazing sought to disrupt normalized perceptions around hazing and challenge traditional approaches to prevention education. This high-impact programming initiative took place over three days in June and impacted more than 1,300 students, faculty and staff.

The conference, which awarded FSU the 2024-25 National Panhellenic Conference Excellence Award, encompasses 26 women’s-only national/international member organizations and advocates for collegiate and alumnae sorority women to advance the sorority experience.

FSU’s Panhellenic Association is the governing body for 17 women’s sororities on campus. It is the largest and oldest women’s organization at Florida State University. All chapters focus on service, scholarship, leadership, sisterhood and personal growth.

These recent recognitions add to the association and chapters’ overall distinctions, including the more than 50 regional, national and international awards by their governing organizations last year.

“Being a Panhellenic woman at Florida State means the world to me,” said FSU Panhellenic President Alexa Hymes. “I’m incredibly lucky to be surrounded by women who are deeply committed to lifting one another up and building a stronger community every single day. Receiving the Excellence Award is a tremendous honor and a true testament to everything we do as a council.”

This award recognizes leaders who have created a lasting impact on their institution, leaving a legacy of service.

NASPA is the leading association for the advancement, health and sustainability of the student affairs profession. Each year, NASPA recognizes individuals who demonstrate distinction in the higher education field, have served in leadership roles in NASPA, regionally or nationally and are recognized by colleagues and contribute significantly to the field of higher education.

“I am deeply honored to be named among the esteemed Pillars for 2025,” Chu said. “Although this award is presented to me, it belongs to many individuals who have supported me throughout my journey. Thank you so much for this recognition alongside so many amazing professionals in our field.”

At FSU, Chu oversees Fraternity & Sorority Life, University Housing and Childcare, New Student and Family Programs, Student Engagement and the Panama City campus Student Affairs. Previously, he served as the Deputy Chief Officer of Student Affairs at Valdosta State University and held leadership positions at Georgia State University and the University of California, Santa Barbara.

“He embodies the essence of a true leader, inspiring and motivating those around him to perform at their best. His unwavering support and dedication make a significant impact on our lives.”

– FSU student Malena Romero, chief of staff for Student Government Association

Chu continues to give back to this field by serving on multiple regional and national boards within and outside of NASPA. From 2006-2012, he served on NASPA’s Undergraduate Fellows Program (NUFP) National Board of Directors. He resumed service in 2017 and was appointed Chair of the Board in 2022. In June 2023, he was honored by Region III with the NUFP Champion Award for his prolonged and impactful service to the program.

“Dr. Zduy Chu embodies the qualities and accomplishments that define a NASPA Pillar of the Profession,” said Amy Hecht, vice president for Student Affairs. “His unwavering dedication, innovative leadership and significant contributions to student affairs make him deserving of this prestigious award.”

With over 20 years of experience dedicated to advancing student success and leadership development, Chu has implemented programs that address critical student needs and focused his efforts on success, engagement and retention.

“Dr. Chu never hesitates to give us his time, and his energy is always incredible and infectious,” said FSU student Malena Romero, chief of staff for Student Government Association and a resident assistant. “He embodies the essence of a true leader, inspiring and motivating those around him to perform at their best. His unwavering support and dedication make a significant impact on our lives.”

Chu earned his Doctor of Education in educational leadership and administration from Georgia State University and both his master’s and bachelor’s degree from the University of Arkansas. He is also a certified Intercultural Development Inventory administrator, as well as a facilitator for “StrengthsQuest” and “LeaderShape.”

The students spent the day picking up downed trees, moving furniture out of flooded houses and helping wherever else they could.

“I was very touched by the initiative our IFC community showed,” said Amy Hecht, vice president for Student Affairs. “Their commitment to help out a community which was so significantly hit by this disaster was inspiring.”

Ian Seibert, FSU IFC vice president of scholarship and service, realized that most disaster relief organizations were still getting set up to receive organized volunteers. He figured the IFC could help if they just showed up, and they quickly did, knocking on doors and asking if homeowners needed help. The word quickly spread, and they started getting requests from churches, small businesses and locals asking for assistance.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new research center was held Tuesday, Sept. 10.

The center will serve as a multifaceted national support system, guiding chapters in their pursuit of excellence with three core goals: build collaborative communities, innovate holistic development programs and empower with data-driven decision-making.

By addressing these aspects, the center aims to empower fraternity and sorority members to become successful within their respective organizations, as well as responsible and compassionate leaders in the broader community.

“The Center for Fraternity and Sorority Organizational Wellness will put FSU on the national stage for the conversation around fraternity and sorority wellness and organizational success,” said Amy Hecht, vice president for the Division of Student Affairs. “Fraternity and Sorority Life at FSU has proven exemplary leadership, and we are proud to share our organizations’ successes on the regional and national levels.”

The center is embedded in Fraternity and Sorority Life at Florida State (FSL). Its research, scholarship and practice are guided by the Foundational Leadership and Organizational Wellness (FLOW) model, published by Freddy Juarez, director of FSL; Jarred Pernier, assistant director for operational excellence within FSL; and Brittany Devies, inaugural director for the Center for Fraternity and Sorority Organizational Wellness. This model is grounded in the philosophical belief that individual leaders can create organizational change and success with generative outcomes.

“Currently, in fraternity and sorority research, organizational success is commonly linked to hazing prevention and anti-hazing strategies,” Juarez said. “There is ample room to integrate research from leadership studies, user-centered design, organizational learning and student wellness to fine-tune and reclassify markers for their development. This new center will help individuals who are dedicated to changing the narrative around fraternity and sorority success make data-driven decisions about their community.”

Tasked with the mission to empower organizational wellness through growth and to foster a thriving community, the team will work together to address the challenge of understanding what distinguishes a successful chapter from an underperforming one.

Devies, a two-time FSU alumna whose previous research focused on college student leadership development, explained that chapters have diverse needs, and a “one-size-fits-all approach is no longer effective in nurturing their growth.”

“The core objective of our center is to analytically assess the holistic long-term success of fraternity and sorority life organizations,” Devies said. “This center is one of a kind, focused intentionally on practice to theory to practice grounded in data-driven decision-making. This team has spent years cultivating a deep understanding of what it means to holistically develop young leaders and watch the tremendous impact on our fraternity and sorority organizations. We are overjoyed that this center will allow us the opportunity to share this work on a national scale.”

FSU is home to more than 50 fraternity and sorority chapters across four governing councils. FSL organizations recently celebrated winning 122 regional and national awards this academic year by recognizing their leadership, scholarship and service.

“Our FSL student leaders and organizations are changing the culture of Greek Lettered Organizations,” said Zduy Chu, assistant vice president for Student Affairs. “The establishment of this new center reshapes the conversation around student success within the FSL community in Florida and across the nation—it will assist other institutions in finding practical solutions to everyday issues.”

Several chapters received the highest honors from regional and national organizations, showcasing their commitment to excellence and significant contributions to their communities.

FSU is home to over 50 fraternity and sorority chapters across four governing councils: Interfraternity Council, Multicultural Greek Council, National Pan-Hellenic Council and Panhellenic Association. In 2024, NICHE ranked Florida State University No. 1 as the Best Greek Life College in America and No. 6 College with the Best Student Life in America.

“Fraternity and Sorority Life at FSU has been a pillar of the FSU community for over 100 years,” said Amy Hecht, vice president for Student Affairs. “We are honored to see our chapters recognized at unprecedented levels by their individual governing organizations at the regional, national and international levels. We are proud of these students and deeply thankful to the countless stakeholders who give their time and energy to this community.”

The vision of FSU’s Fraternity and Sorority Life is to develop a community that enables individuals to make values-based decisions, learn tangible skills and contribute to the betterment of the global community.

“The continual recognition of our chapters demonstrates the strong commitment this community has to excellence in their organizations,” said Freddy Juarez, director of Fraternity and Sorority Life. “The FSU community will continue to foster not only a safe community but one poised to thrive and foster leadership at all levels.”

Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs Zduy Chu emphasized the growth and impact various organizations have experienced within their communities.

“It’s been amazing to see how the student leaders and these organizations have grown over these past few years,” Chu said. “I’m proud of what they do for our community and am happy to see them acknowledged for their impact.”
