Located on the first floor of the Student Union, the booth offers an interactive video experience designed to deliver immediate encouragement and support.

“Florida State is actively fighting to help break down the barriers and stigma of mental health concerns,” Vice President for Student Affairs Amy Hecht said. “We are grateful to offer the Hope Booth on campus, expanding our wellness support with this innovative resource.”

FSU Counseling & Psychological Services recently celebrated the opening of the Hope Booth. Based out of Atlanta, Hope Booth is a mental health and suicide prevention nonprofit whose mission is to deliver hope and connect individuals to free support and resources.

Students, faculty, staff and visitors can visit Hope Booth any time to begin a three-minute immersive experience. There is an adjustable height button to help with viewing the screen and closed captioning accessibility. After the user answers a few questions, the narrator will provide encouraging words of hope and action steps such as deep breathing or repeating positive words of affirmation.

Gloria Umanah, founder and CEO of Hope Booth, spoke to students and staff who gathered at the Student Union for the unveiling. She asked students to think of their mental health as performing maintenance on a vehicle with certain steps car owners can take to help keep the car running before the check engine light comes on.

“We think mental health care should be the same,” Umanah said. “You don’t have to be on the verge of crises. What does it look like to take care of our mental health, to rejuvenate our own hope and then spread that hope everywhere we go so eventually we pioneer a movement where no one goes unseen?”

The weeklong series Sept. 21-27 includes career fairs, networking events and on-campus interviews designed to help students take the next step in their professional journeys.

Seminole Futures offers seven days of guided career exploration led by the FSU Career Center within the Division of Student Affairs. This week’s fairs and employer events are designed for students seeking internships or full-time positions after graduation or early career programs geared toward first- and second-year students.

FSU ranks No. 13 among public universities on The Princeton Review’s list of the Top 20 Best Schools for Internships.

“Seminole Futures is an opportunity for students of all levels to engage in firsthand networking experiences with employers ready to help kickstart their careers,” said Rob Liddell, assistant vice president for Career Services. “We aim to support student success through interactive engagements and forge connections with our employer partners as they welcome the next generation of professionals.”

The flagship Seminole Futures Job and Internship Fair will take place Thursday, Sept. 24, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Donald L. Tucker Civic Center. More than 100 employers from a range of industries will meet with students to discuss career opportunities. Participating employers include Enterprise Mobility, Insight Global, NewDay USA and ReliaQuest. The Engineering Job and Internship Fair will take place Tuesday, Sept. 22.

Letícia Falcão, a third-year marketing major, is looking forward to connecting with local employers and gaining professional experience before graduation.

“I’d like to see what options are available to me locally while I continue thinking about my future in business,” Falcão said.

To view the full list of employers attending this semester’s fairs and events, visit NoleNetwork.

“Welcoming more than 225 hiring organizations to the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering and the Civic Center is a clear testament to the value of FSU talent,” said FSU Director of Employer Relations Christy Mantzanas. “This level of employer interest will bring more career possibilities for our students as they prepare to launch their professional journeys.”

Florida State University First Lady Jai Vartikar said FSU’s milestone anniversary offers a special opportunity to bring people together through the traditions and spirit of Homecoming.

“Homecoming has always been about connection, and FSU’s 175th anniversary gives us an extraordinary opportunity to widen that circle of celebration,” Vartikar said. “We look forward to welcoming students, alumni, families and friends in the community to experience the traditions, energy and sense of belonging that make Florida State University so special.”

Students, parents, alumni, friends and community members are invited to be part of the parade and Seminole LIVE! 175. This year’s theme, “Tradition Takes the Spotlight,” will celebrate FSU’s legacy and Seminole spirit through a full lineup of events.

“Homecoming is a powerful reminder of what makes Florida State so special — our students, our traditions and the sense of belonging that connects generations of Seminoles,” said Amy Hecht, vice president for Student Affairs. “Student life is at the heart of that experience, and we wanted to create more opportunities during Homecoming to build community and celebrate the pride that comes with being a Seminole.”

One of the most anticipated events of the week, the Homecoming Parade will begin at 3:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 20, at the Donald L. Tucker Civic Center. The proposed parade route will head north on Macomb Street, west on College Avenue, south on Copeland Street and west on Jefferson Street before turning south onto Varsity Drive and west onto St. Augustine, ending at Doak Campbell Stadium.

The parade will feature the world-renowned FSU Marching Chiefs, who will make history as the first collegiate marching band from Florida to march in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in 2027. In keeping with tradition, the FSU cheerleaders, student organizations, colleges and departments across the university will decorate floats and golf carts.

The FSU and Tallahassee communities are invited to line the parade route and be part of the Homecoming tradition. Community organizations are welcome to participate in the parade and register their entry. Registration closes at 11:59 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 1.

Seminole LIVE! 175, a pep rally, carnival and concert, will be held at the Main Campus Fields, 1001 St. Augustine St. In celebration of FSU’s 175th anniversary, members of the Tallahassee community are invited to join students, faculty, staff and alumni for the festivities.

FSU’s weeklong events from Nov. 13-21 culminate with the Homecoming football game against NC State.

A Florida State tradition dating to 1958, Family Weekend gives students the opportunity to share campus life with their families and loved ones through activities, performances and other events throughout the weekend.

“As Florida State proudly celebrates its 175th anniversary, Family Weekend offers families a special opportunity to experience FSU’s vibrant spirit with their students,” said Amy Hecht, vice president for Student Affairs. “The weekend welcomes families of students at every stage — not just first-year students. We encourage them to enjoy time together on campus and create lasting memories.”

This year’s lineup features five signature events, including sold-out performances by the FSU Flying High Circus, which returns to Family Weekend for the first time since the 2024 tornadoes. Last year, the circus hosted three sold-out sessions during Family Weekend featuring tent tours, juggling and concessions, but this year they will hold two performances. The Flying High Circus was the first activity for men and women after the institution returned to co-educational status and has been a favorite Family Weekend event ever since.

In recognition of FSU’s 175th anniversary, Family Weekend also will feature something new, a student banner competition. More than 20 Registered Student Organizations have signed up to compete in the inaugural competition. The banners will be displayed in the Student Union throughout the weekend, and guest judges representing various aspects of student life across campus will vote on Friday.

Abby Cloud Langdon, program manager for New Student & Family Programs, said Family Weekend has continued to evolve since its beginnings in 1958 to reflect what students and their families want from the weekend.

“We’re in such a celebratory milestone here at FSU, and our goal is to showcase what FSU offers institution-wide with what our students and families want to experience,” Langdon said. “The goal of the banner competition being debuted in FSU’s 175th year is to allow our families to get a glimpse of why FSU means so much to our students, while offering a friendly competitive element among the submissions.”

A family member who attended Family Weekend in 2025 completed the feedback survey and said: “We really enjoyed the chance to connect as a family while also seeing what campus life is like for our student. The variety of events made the weekend fun and memorable.”

Tickets for Family Weekend signature events are on sale until Sunday, Sept. 20. Events include:

Friday Night @ FSU

Flying High Circus performances (sold out)

Get Up, It’s Game Day! Fun Run & Walk

Tailgate Brunch

Garnet & Gold Tailgate before the FSU vs. Central Arkansas football game

FSU Career Services Assistant Vice President Rob Liddell emphasizes that opportunity still exists for those who are prepared despite flattening hiring demand. Employers are increasingly filling roles through internship conversions and alternative pathways, including project-based and hybrid positions, placing a premium on candidates who can demonstrate real-world experience and professional maturity.

“Graduates who engage deeply and consistently through internships, research, leadership and skill building are standing out from the competition surrounding entry-level hiring,” Liddell said, noting that today’s market rewards tangible evidence of readiness.

He also highlights a persistent challenge: employers often struggle to assess communication and leadership skills. At FSU, more than 95% of students complete a foundational career-readiness course that helps them build portfolios and document competencies through hands-on experiences.

As artificial intelligence reshapes industries, Liddell underscores that human-centered skills are becoming even more valuable. Creativity, adaptability, ethical judgment and emotional intelligence are increasingly essential in a workforce where technology handles routine tasks.

Liddell is available to discuss how students can navigate a shifting workforce, and why preparation, not panic, is the defining factor for success. Media can reach out to Liddell for interviews by emailing him at rll18l@fsu.edu.

Rob Liddell, assistant vice president, Florida State University Career Services

In your experience of being involved in career preparation, how do you best sum up the current climate we’re living in with college graduates entering the work force?

While the early career landscape is evolving, it is far from discouraging. It stands to reason that for well-prepared graduates and for institutions, like Florida State, that intentionally align education, experience and workforce demand, this is a moment of strategic advantage. Hiring organizations are prioritizing candidates who demonstrate applied experience, transferrable competencies and professional maturity. College graduates are entering a more selective market that rewards preparedness. Adjacent to tradition hiring, career entry points are expanding into project-based work, rotational or hybrid roles, contract and post-baccalaureate internships, and entrepreneurial pathways.

With AI weighing so heavily on several industries, what do you believe are the irreplaceable human competencies that they need to excel in the work force?

Many have approached AI-generated content with suspicion as they might have experienced occasional hallucinations, surface-level syntax or incoherent logic. Routine and technical tasks are becoming increasingly automated within the workplace. This development has placed premium value on distinctly human capabilities — the competencies that are difficult to replicate, scale, or substitute and that drive value, trust and impact for others. Among these irreplaceable human competencies are initiative and agency; creativity and innovation; ethical judgment and values-based decision-making; adaptability and intellectual agility; emotional intelligence and relational acumen; leadership and informal influence; integrative critical thinking; and persuasive communication.

In a world of abundant tools, the differentiator is not access; it is an ability to take action across novel and ambiguous situations. Taking action in this type of environment highlights the need for meaningful human connection across team collaboration, client relationships and navigating human dynamics (resolving conflict) in complex organizations. Further, as AI fetches and creates more content and information, human competencies will add important clarity and credibility by telling compelling stories, influencing complexity into alignment and action, and in communicating nuance.
