President’s Advisory Panel membership announced

Florida State University President John Thrasher has announced the members of the President’s Advisory Panel on University Namings and Recognitions.

“I want to thank the members of this panel for their willingness to take on this important matter,” Thrasher said. “I expect them to be deliberate, to be thoughtful and to seek input from the entire Florida State community as they do their work.”

The 15-member panel of university students, faculty, staff and alumni will examine and review current university policies concerning campus names and markers, including statues and other recognitions.

Thrasher asked the university’s chief diversity officer, Renisha Gibbs, to chair the panel. Gibbs is associate vice president for Human Resources at FSU.

Thrasher charged the panel with researching the issues, meeting and engaging with university constituencies to seek input and feedback, determining criteria for appropriate naming policies and making any other recommendations deemed necessary.

The first meeting of the panel will be announced next week. Among the first items of business will be to determine a schedule and locations for meetings. The panel has been asked to complete its work with all deliberate speed.

Panel meetings will be noticed, open to the public and will include opportunities for public comment.

FSU administrators met Aug. 28, the first day of the fall semester, to discuss the topic and initiate discussions with leaders of the Student Government Association. As a result, it was decided to appoint an advisory panel to review the university’s policies and make recommendations to the president.

In the coming weeks, the university will launch a website to provide additional information and updates on the panel’s progress.
