Florida State University President John Thrasher and Vice President for Student Affairs Mary Coburn have been selected as recipients of NASPA Region III awards for their outstanding service and contributions to higher education.

Each year, NASPA, the Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education, recognizes higher education administrators and faculty members who are doing exceptional work in the student affairs profession.

Thrasher is the 2017 recipient of the President’s Award, presented annually to a university president who has advanced the quality of student life on campus by supporting the institution’s student affairs staff and initiatives.

“Since the first month of his appointment, John has had a laser focus on responding to student needs and providing a holistic education for our students,” Coburn said. “He engages with students personally and demonstrates his love and concern for them in all he does.”

Coburn is the 2017 recipient of the John Jones Award for Outstanding Performance as a Senior Student Affairs officer. The award signifies the valuable contributions Coburn has made in her time at FSU and exemplifies her many years of dedicated service.

“I can’t think of anyone more deserving of this recognition than Mary,” Thrasher said. “She has selflessly dedicated her career, more than 40 years, to the well-being and success of college students and student affairs professionals. Her knowledge and leadership has greatly enhanced FSU’s campus.”

Coburn is retiring in May after 14 years as FSU’s vice president for Student Affairs. Coburn plans to continue teaching at the College of Education.

This year, NASPA received a record number of nominations, making the selection process even more competitive. The awards will be presented at a ceremony during the NASPA Region III Summer Symposium which will take place June 15-18 in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.

NASPA is the leading association for the advancement, health and sustainability of the student affairs professions that honors professionals who provide programs, experiences and services that cultivate student learning and success.
