New program to spotlight top businesses of FSU alumni

Now Accepting Applications for the Inaugural ‘Seminole 100’

Florida State University and the Jim Moran Institute for Global Entrepreneurship, housed in the College of Business, are creating a new program to recognize successful businesses owned by FSU alumni.

The Seminole 100 will celebrate the Top 100 owners who have spearheaded some of the fastest-growing businesses in America.

“On FSU’s campus and throughout the State of Florida, important work is being done to educate students on how to become leading entrepreneurs,” said Randy Blass, executive director of the Jim Moran Institute for Global Entrepreneurship. “Seminole 100 will highlight the results of that rigorous academic environment, and it will demonstrate the entrepreneurial ingenuity instilled at FSU.”

The inaugural Seminole 100 will include businesses of all sizes from a range of industries. The program is open to privately held businesses owned by FSU alumni that generated revenues of at least $100,000 in 2013 and at least $2 million in 2016.

Applications will be accepted until April 30, 2017, by Inc. Magazine. It is partnering with FSU to verify financial information from businesses and then rank them based on growth during a three-year period. Businesses that qualify will also be named to Inc. Magazine’s “Inc. 5000,” a comprehensive list of the 5,000 fastest-growing private companies in the nation.

The new initiative is funded and organized by the Jim Moran Institute for Global Entrepreneurship as part of the historic $100 million gift to FSU from Jan Moran. That gift, announced in December 2015, enhanced the 20-year mission of the Jim Moran Institute to train entrepreneurs and it spurred the creation of the new Jim Moran School of Entrepreneurship. The new funding also enables an annual celebration on campus to honor entrepreneurs who graduated from Florida State.

The university will host the inaugural celebration of the Seminole 100 in the spring of 2018. The public event will welcome FSU alumni, friends and honorees to the Florida State University Alumni Center for a reception, dinner and awards ceremony.

Learn more at seminole100.fsu.edu. The list of honorees will be posted there when they are announced in August.
