Florida State President Responds to NCAA Reaction to Statements he Made in Interviews with Mews Media

T. K. Wetherell

The National Collegiate Athletic Association said in a news release today that there was no agreement between the NCAA and Florida State on university penalties in the academic misconduct case against the school.

University President T.K. Wetherell said that the NCAA had missed the point he was making. The fact of the matter is that there was an across-the-board agreement between the NCAA and Florida State on student-athlete eligibility, and student-athletes gave up their academic due process rights in accepting the plan.

Wetherell said today that he would provide documentation of the understanding he had with the NCAA at the association's Indianapolis Headquarters on Nov. 15, when the NCAA Division I Infractions Appeals Committee will hear the university's appeal.

"We worked every step of the way with the NCAA on this case, and we had an understanding that if we did everything as they said, all player eligibility matters would be resolved," Wetherell said.

We told this to our student-athletes, and they gave up their rights of appeal. In doing so, they were led to believe that all eligibility matters would be resolved if they complied with the suspensions plan that the NCAA set forth.

"We complied fully with this plan. We never played any ineligible players,” Wetherell said.
