A whale of a read-a-thon
Readers at Florida State University embark upon a mighty undertaking: reading Herman Melville’s Moby Dick aloud, from start to finish, in 24 hours (or so). Phyllis Pancella shoves off Monday morning, reading page one in full costume, inside Florida State’s Robert Manning Strozier Library. Other students and faculty will follow and read fifteen minute segments of the lengthy novel until complete.
Human Performance Lab Unveiled
The Florida State University College of Human Sciences cuts the ribbon on its new Human Performance Laboratory. The lab is home to the Institute of Sports Sciences and Medicine.
FSU College of Music celebrates Carlisle Floyd
Internationally renowned composer and father of American Opera Carlisle Floyd returns to Florida State University for a celebration of his life and career. Floyd came to FSU in 1947 as a professor in the College of Music. A few short years later, he had written and staged "Susannah", the opera that would go on to define his legacy, and ultimately the legacy of the FSU College of Music.
FSU remembers 9/11 ten years later
The Florida State University observes the tenth anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks with a weekend of activities including a special arrangement of America the Beautiful performed by the FSU Marching Chiefs Saturday and a Sunday night candlelight vigil.
FSU commemorates 10th anniversary of 9/11
The Florida State University community comes together to commemorate the ten year anniversary of September 11th, displaying a commemorative quilt sewn by students and placing flags on Landis Green.
FSU freshman receives 9/11 scholarship on 10th anniversary
Patrick Steffens, a New York City native and son of an NYPD officer, is the first recipient of the Seminole Club of New York City's September 11th Scholarship. Steffans's father was heavily involved in recovery operations at the World Trade Center immediately following the attacks.
Meet the new provost
Florida State University Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs Garnett S. Stokes shares her thoughts on higher education. Stokes was named provost in May after a six-month national search. The provost oversees the overall academic mission of the university.
