'Garnet and Gold Goes Green' enters its sixth season
Florida State University football fans have collected a staggering 26 tons of recyclable material at home games over the past five years, and this year they will again have an opportunity to keep Doak Campbell Stadium “green” by recycling used beverage containers and reducing litter.
Beginning with the FSU – Samford game on Saturday, Sept. 4, student volunteers of Garnet & Gold Goes Green were on hand to collect the recyclable materials (glass, plastic and aluminum) from the tailgating lots surrounding the stadium. Fans can help out by using the large recycling stations placed at various lots and stadium entrances.
New this year is the opportunity to recycle beverage containers inside the stadium. Recycling bins, donated by Coca-Cola, are now available next to the trash cans in the concession areas of the stadium.
“The Florida State University community cares a great deal about the environment and taking care of our campus. This recycling program gives all fans a chance to act on that and make a difference,” said Ariana Cano, GGGG volunteer coordinator. “Garnet & Gold Goes Green would not be possible without the continuous support of our partners: FSU Athletics, FSU Solid Waste & Recycling, Aramark, the Center for Leadership & Civic Education and the FSU Army ROTC, Seminole Battalion.”
Garnet & Gold Goes Green began as a litter prevention program and has grown to include other parts of the game-day celebration, including the Varsity Club, the President’s Box, and Jimbo’s True Seminole Tailgate.
