Nationally recognized youth activist joins kick butts day rally
One of the nation’s most popular youth activists, Chad Bullock, will speak out against the tobacco industry at a Kick Butts Day event to be held at Florida State University’s Oglesby Union Green from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on March 24. Bullock is expected to speak at 1 p.m.
The event, sponsored by the Breathe Easy organization in conjunction with the Sustainable Campus Initiative, is designed to raise awareness about Florida State University’s Breathe Easy initiative. The initiative establishes “Breathe Easy Zones” that prohibit smoking within 25 to 50 feet of an entrance of a campus building.
Bullock is currently promoting helloCHANGE.org’s LIPS Campaign, an effort that collects photos of the lips of young people and celebrities who have chosen to reject tobacco use. Bullock has been featured on NBC Nightly News, Fox News and CNN. In 2008, he became the first non-celebrity to win a Teen Choice Award for his anti-smoking efforts.
“We are so excited to have Chad Bullock speak at our event,” said Kevin Frentz, coordinator of education and training programs at Thagard Student Health Center and Breathe Easy’s adviser. “His presence alone will bring so much energy, attention and awareness to our cause. He will increase student participation and help us gauge the student body’s attitude toward the Breathe Easy smoking policy.”
The event will combine the dissemination of information with refreshments and entertainment including games and music. Several student organizations, including the Anti-Tobacco Initiative, SUNN (Students for Understanding Nutrition Now) and STRIKE (Student Tobacco Reform Initiative: Knowledge for Eternity), are expected to participate.
