FSU education professor honored for student affairs work

A faculty member in the Florida State University College of Education and the Center for Leadership & Civic Education has been recognized for her many contributions to student affairs at the university.

Kathy Guthrie, an assistant professor in leadership studies, has received the Outstanding Contribution to Student Affairs Award for Region III (the southeastern United States) from NASPA – Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education. The association bestows this award on individuals who have made a contribution to the student affairs profession in three areas: the development of professionals, research and publication, and active involvement with professional organizations.

“I am humbled and honored to be chosen for this award,” Guthrie said. “I am in awe of the students we have here at Florida State. The fact that students took the time out of their busy schedules to nominate me means the world.”

Guthrie is an assistant professor in the Higher Education Program, housed within the College of Education’s Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies. She also coordinates the Undergraduate Academic Certificate in Leadership Studies program at FSU and works with the Center for Leadership & Civic Education.

"Kathy is an advocate, mentor and scholar,” said Laura Osteen, director of the Center for Leadership & Civic Education. “Her commitment to student learning and leadership education at Florida State is inspiring.”

With more than 11,000 members at 1,400 campuses, and representing 29 countries, NASPA is the foremost professional association for student affairs administrators, faculty, and graduate and undergraduate students.

Guthrie received her Ph.D. in educational organization and leadership from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Her master’s degree from Illinois State University is in educational administrative foundations with an emphasis in college student personnel, and her undergraduate degree is in business and finance from North Central College in Naperville, Ill.
