Management Faculty Ranked Among Nation's Best for Research
The Department of Management in the Florida State University College of Business has been ranked No. 4 in the nation for the impact of its faculty’s research by Science Watch, a nationally recognized research-evaluation newsletter.
Measured by the number of times a faculty member’s published article is cited by others in their research work, the newest ranking for the management department is a clear indication of the importance of the research conducted by the faculty.
“The management faculty focus on a wide variety of important business issues,” said Annette Ranft, chairwoman of the Department of
Management and the Jim Moran Professor of Business Administration. “Whether researching emotion, stress, reputation in the workplace, human resource practices, entrepreneurship or strategic leadership, the faculty in the management department are propelling the field of management forward. This newest ranking is evidence of that.”
Florida State falls behind only the University of Maryland, Northwestern University and the Georgia Institute of Technology in the Science Watch rankings. The criteria for the rankings require that at least 100 articles be published by a department’s faculty within a designated time period, a feat that Florida State surpassed with just one-half the number of tenured or tenure-track faculty that the other institutions employ.
“It is an honor to be recognized for the quantity and quality of the groundbreaking work the Florida State University management faculty is doing,” said Gerald Ferris, the Frances Eppes Professor of Management and Professor of Psychology. “This prestigious distinction places the Department of Management among the very top programs in the country.”
Science Watch is a subscription newsletter that uses the unique citation data of its publisher, Thomson Scientific, to provide rankings, interviews and reports on the most significant academic research currently taking place. An independent publication, Science Watch tracks trends and performance in basic research and does not take other universities’ votes into account, a common practice among other ranking entities. This methodology provides an unbiased account of the best faculties in the nation.
“This accomplishment of the Department of Management is overwhelming,” said Caryn L. Beck-Dudley, dean of the College of Business. “A department publishing more than 100 scholarly, cutting-edge articles is an accomplishment, especially for a department consisting of only 14 tenured and tenure-track faculty.”
