FSU Libraries celebrate 75 years as a Federal Depository Library

Florida State University Libraries are celebrating the 75th anniversary of FSU’s Federal Depository Library this year. Robert Manning Strozier Library, located in the heart of FSU’s main campus in Tallahassee, was designated as a Federal Depository Library by the U.S. Congress in 1941 and provides the public with free, equitable access to U.S. government publications.

“This is a milestone for the FSU Libraries,” said Julia Zimmerman, Dean of FSU Libraries. “We are proud to have participated in the evolution of the Depository Library program as it has become more and more digital and integrated into 21st century library services. We appreciate the opportunity to partner with the Federal Depository Library Program and look forward to providing seamless access to government information for many years to come.”

Over 75 years, the collection has grown to more than 470,000 tangible government documents, including roughly 340,000 microfilms, 135,000 bound volumes of congressional and agency publications, and 1,600 maps. Today, most government publications are published and distributed electronically. The physical collection is freely available to everyone.
The Federal Depository Library Program, or FDLP, was created by Congress to ensure that all Americans have access to published government information. In addition to being an FDLP library, the FSU Libraries serve as depositories for documents published by the State of Florida documents and the United Nations.

The 75th anniversary will be commemorated by a special reception at Strozier Library where the U.S. Government Publishing Office (GPO) will deliver a congratulatory message to FSU Libraries on behalf of the U.S. Superintendent of Documents and the staff of the GPO.
